Lady Jays Face Defeat Against the Monarchs

By Addison Sporleder

The Pierce Lady Jays hosted the David City Aquinas Monarchs at the Pierce Softball Complex on Thursday, September 15. After four innings and a bit of a rain delay, the Lady Jays unfortunately fell to the Monarchs with a score of 12-0.

Pierce recorded three hits for the game. These came from Alexis Sporleder, Madelyn Hanson, and Hayle DeBoer. DeBoer also stole two bases, and Aubrey Hanson stole one. Kylie Dvorak added one strikeout for the game.

Sporleder commented, “We did good on defense, but our offense was kind of struggling a little bit.”

Head coach Marika VonSeggern stated, “Our outfield did a better job of getting the ball in quickly and knowing where they are going with it. We also had a few more stops in the infield than we have been having. We just need to improve our communication so those defensive players know at the moment where to go with the ball. We still have a lot of areas we need to fine-tune and focus on.”

The Lady Jays will be back on the dirt in Ponca for a triangular on Thursday, September 22.

Softball Strikes Out at Wayne Triangular

By Shayna Hawkinson

On Tuesday, September 13, the Pierce softball team faced off against Wayne and Boone Central in a triangular held at Wayne. The Lady Jays lost both contests.

For the Wayne game, Pierce lost 13-1. In the first inning, Pierce was able to score a run and hold Wayne scoreless, but then in the second inning, the Lady Blue Devils went on a scoring run, adding seven and holding the Lady Jays scoreless. Starting the third inning down 7-1, Pierce gave up an additional six unanswered runs, making the final score 13-1.

Freshman pitcher Kylie Dvorak had a total of 2 strikeouts. She says, “We really need to focus on cleaning up our infield and working as a team and focusing. If we make a mistake, we need to shake it off right away and move on to the next.”

Madelyn Hansen stole two bases, and Brooke Reddest had a hit for the Lady Jays.

Marika VonSeggern, head coach for the Lady Jays, states, “In the triangular against Boone Central and Wayne, we struggled to get our offense going. Defensively, we also seemed to struggle. We gave up some big plays and made a few too many errors.”

In the second game, Pierce again fell short, losing to Boone Central 12-0. In the first inning, the Lady Jays defense gave up only two runs, but in the bottom of the second, Pierce allowed Boone Central to score 10. Remaining scoreless in the third inning, Pierce lost 12-0.

The Lady Jays managed to have two hits in this game, coming from Alexis Sporleder and Reddest.

Pierce will play in a triangular at Ponca on Thursday, September 22.
