Girls Golf Takes Second at Home Invite

By Emma Risinger

On Saturday, September 11,  the girls golf team took second place at their home invitational meet held at Pierce Community Golf Course. It was a fairly large meet, and aside from Pierce, a total of 11 other schools were in attendance: Scotus, O’Neill, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Boone Central, West Holt, West Point-Beemer, Stanton, Norfolk Catholic, Crofton, Thurston County, and Elkhorn Valley.

As stated, the team overall took second place, shooting a 379.

As for individual placements, senior Alena Peters shot an 89 and placed sixth. Then was senior Keli Shermer who placed 8th with a 91. Next was senior Zaylah Pfanstiel who ended with a 97, which was enough for 11th place. When Pfanstiel was asked about her feelings on her personal performance and that of the team, she said, “The meet went very well. I shot my personal best, and it made me feel amazing, and on top of that we got our personal team best. Everyone worked so hard that day, and it was an amazing outcome.”

Following Pfanstiel was freshman Rylee Altwine who had a 102 and received 15th place. Finally, the last of the varsity team was junior Ashley Wacker who totaled 108 and was 23rd overall.

As for JV, sophomore Veronica Orona and freshman Grace Behmer shot a 128 and 135 and placed 43rd and 47th, respectively.

To next see the Lady Jays golf team compete, there will be another meet held at the Albion Country Club against Boone Central on Saturday, September 17, so be ready to catch the results.

Girls Golf Triumphs at Hartington

By Emma Risinger

On Tuesday, September 6, the Pierce girls golf team set their sights on Hartington to compete in a triangular against Hartington Cedar Catholic and Norfolk Catholic. The team brought home first place, their second team first place of the season.

The team as a whole shot a 203. The team improves more and more with each meet, which has instilled a sense of optimism in players and coaches alike. Specifically, head coach Melinda Stelling has some hopeful predictions, saying, “After seeing what the girls have accomplished so far, I have a very positive outlook for the rest of the season. One of our goals is to make it to state as a team, and if the girls continue to work hard and improve, I feel that is a very good possibility.”

The girls also played relatively well individually, as well as having placed as a team. The medalist of the day was senior Keli Shermer, who brought home a very exciting first place after shooting just a 46. Shermer was very proud of what she accomplished, remarking, “It's a hard course. I'm feeling good about how I didn't make many mistakes. I'm happy the team also did well.”

As for the rest of the team, senior Alena Peters ended with a 52 and placed third, followed by senior Zaylah Pfanstiel who had a 53 and seventh place. The final varsity competitor was junior Ashley Wacker who ended with a 60 and finished in eleventh place.

As for the JV team, sophomore Veronica Orona and Grace Behmer finished with a 74 and 77, respectively.

This was clearly a less challenging outing in terms of the number of competing teams, but it was a unique course with lots of trees and out-of-bounds areas. Stelling feels that the meet brought out the fact that at this point in the season, the girls need to focus on fine-tuning their skills. She said that there are a few things that need work. Some girls need work on putting, some on chipping, and some on straightening out their drivers and irons.

Up next, the girls will be in Wayne on Thursday, September 15, to compete in a triangular against Cedar Catholic High School and Wayne.
