District Music Contest

by Ella Gaes

On Friday, April 22, the district music contest was held at Norfolk High School. Schools from the surrounding area traveled to Norfolk with their bands, choirs, and small groups.

The schools had the choice to add smaller groups as well as solos apart from their main performances. The groups would then perform in front of judges where they would rate their performance one through three.

The overall band performance received a one plus.

The Pierce Dixieland band and the Pierce percussion ensemble were rated with a one, which is the highest rating. The jazz  band received a one plus.

The trombone solos included Tate Reinke with a one and Christopher Efta who received a two. Alexus Sindelar received a one in her trumpet solo. Travis Emory participated in a snare drum and Marimba solo, both placing a one. The brass quintet received a one.

All of the following groups received a one rating. The flute duet of Hadleigh Collison and Angeline Skrdla. Ashley Wacker performing a flute solo. Tenor saxophone solo, which included Shawn Zellmer. Sarah Fenton playing a solo with the clarinet. The flute trio including Chloey Cederburg, Kaley Johnson, and Wacker. The final groups included mixed clarinet quartet, saxophone trio, and saxophone quartet.

Michael Sindt, the band instructor at Pierce High, said, “I felt the band groups and solos did incredibly well and had numerous superior ratings. I was very proud of the efforts and how well they performed.”

As a whole, the Pierce choir received a two rating.

Katelyn Gubbels, a junior in choir, commented on the day saying, “I had a great time and had a lot of fun meeting new people. Overall, it was a great experience, and I think we did well as a whole choir. My goals for next year are to recruit new people into choir and improve as a whole.”

The vocal quintet, American Dream, received a two. A duet with Megan Druyor and Emma Risinger earned a two, while the vocal trio of Brooke Reddest, Bethany Kaup, and Gubbels got a two. A duet of Icis Sackville and Breanna Lindstrom also competed.

Both Hadleigh Collison and Sara Thomsen had vocal solos and each one earned a one. Wacker had a solo as well and received a two.

The choir will have a concert Monday, May 2, and the band will hold a concert Friday, April 29. Both concerts begin at 7 p.m.
