Climate Change Issues

by Ciara Garcia

Climate change is a growing issue that is progressing farther than anticipated. Though the world has tried to put a halt to climate change, there are too many factors in today’s society that cause climate change to progress as it has been without pause.

In the article ‘Code Red’: UN Scientists Warn of Worsening Global Warming by Seth Borenstein, the author speaks a lot about the things that are affected by climate change. Borenstien stated, “The 3,000-plus-page report from 234 scientists said warming is already accelerating sea-level rise and worsening extremes such as heatwaves, droughts, floods, and storms. Tropical cyclones are getting stronger and wetter, while Arctic sea ice is dwindling in the summer and permafrost is thawing.” It is shocking to hear the amount of natural weather affected by climate change. At the rate that global warming is accelerating now, the weather we experience now could seem extreme and wildly distant than weather we could endure in the near future. Student Pierce junior Brielle Unseld stated, “Global warming has always been our problem as long as we’ve been alive and I don't think we take it seriously enough.”

The author also goes into detail about some of the predictions and how they differ from what is actually occurring as the result of climate change. He stated, “For example, the kind of heatwave that used to happen only once every 50 years now happens once a decade, and if the world warms another degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit), it will happen twice every seven years, the report said.” That quote, along with others in the passage, provides proof that there are no definite predictions to any climate change that is possible in the near future. Also proving the credibility of predictions for global warming, the author also stated, “...the world will cross the 1.5-degree-Celsius warming mark in the 2030s, earlier than some past predictions. Warming has ramped up in recent years, data shows.”

Above all, there are many effects of global warming that are happening quicker than what was predicted by scientists. Global Warming is a serious problem and if we don’t do anything soon, it may become irreversible and leave the world dangerous and unpredictable with extreme, harsh climates.
