Child Development Class Teaches Elementary Students

by Kallie Edins

On Friday, December 18, the child development class from the high school traveled down to the elementary to experience what it is like to be a teacher.

Teacher Angie Brodersen comments, “I am ecstatic about how the day went, the only regret I have is that we weren't able to do it all year long due to COVID. It was a valuable experience not just for the high schoolers but the students as well. The interaction between the two age groups benefits everyone.”

The students were broken off into small groups and picked to either teach 1st or 3rd grade students for half an hour. The high school students spent the semester learning all about how a child develops and spent a week preparing educated crafts for the students. Some of the crafts consisted of making snowmen, making reindeer antlers, and playing a Christmas matching game. Usually the child development class spends every Friday with the elementary and is involved with the elementary more, but due to COVID, this was the first time the child development class was able to go.

Sophomore Kaila Spieker also comments on the day by saying, “This was a great experience to learn how to teach kids and I learned that teachers should get more credit for all they do.”
