Lady Jays Softball

Pierce Hosts Softball Tournament

by Taylor Compton

The Pierce High Lady Jays hosted a tournament on Saturday, September 19, at the Pierce softball complex, and Pierce ended up finishing sixth overall with a 1-2 record.

The Lady Jays started off the tournament by playing the Highway 91 Cyclones which includes the schools Howells-Dodge, Clarkson, and Leigh. The Lady Jays fell short during this game with an ending score of 12-0. Junior Makinzie Parsons and freshman Braxtynne Emerson each had one hit.

The next game the Lady Jays played was against the Ord Chanticleers. The Lady Jays just fell short in this game with an ending score of 4-3. Parsons had a total of two hits during this game, and sophomore Isabelle Skrdla also had a total of two hits.

Senior Elizabeth Hammer commented, “We played better our last two games. I don’t think our heads were in it during the first game, but we improved. Proud we got another win under our belts!”

The Lady Jays final game of the day was against the West Point-Beemer Cadets. The Lady Jays came out on top with a score of 16-12. The top hitter of the game was Skrdla with a total of three hits. Following were senior Ashton Oestreich with two hits, Emerson, freshman Hayle DeBoer, sophomore Addison Sporleder, and senior Sarah Miller with one hit each.

Head Coach Marika VonSeggern commented on the game by saying, “Our first game we struggled both offensively and defensively. Our second game, we played very well defensively but couldn’t really get much started on offense. In the third game, we definitely came out ready to win. We gave up a few too many runs defensively, but our offense showed up and allowed us to pull ahead enough to win. We got a big push from Ashton Oestreich with a 3 hit home run, scoring three people, including herself. From there we really came alive and ended up scoring 16 runs. Overall, we had a few things we need to work on and consistency is a big part of that.”

The Lady Jays next game will be a triangular at the Pierce softball complex on Thursday, September 24.

Lady Jays Varsity Softball Plays Triangular at Albion

by Taylor Compton

The Lady Jays softball team played a triangular on Tuesday, September 15, at Albion. They played against Wayne and Boone Central/Newman Grove. The Lady Jays lost to Wayne, but picked themselves back up and beat Boone Central/Newman Grove.

Senior Elizabeth Hammer said, “In our first game, we played pretty well. It was just hard to hit off the Wayne pitcher but we stayed in the fight. I was proud of how well we played in the second game! Everyone finally showed what we have been practicing, and it was nice to finally beat Boone.”

The Lady Jays first game was against Wayne. The Lady Jays took a loss with a score of 2-15. There were a total of two hits during this game which both hits were made by Hayle DeBoer.

Junior Makinzie Parsons noted, “We played really well together as a team, and our defense was very consistent. Our bats didn’t show up like we wanted, but we played hard in spite of that.”

The next game the Lady Jays played was against Boone Central/Newman Grove. The Lady Jays pulled off a win of 6-5. There were a total of 11 hits. Hammer was the top hitter of this game with a total of three hits. Following was sophomore Addison Sporleder with two hits. Sophomore Madison Altwine, freshman Braxtynne Emerson and DeBoer, junior Parsons, senior Sarah Miller and Ashton Oestreich each had a total of one hit.

Head coach Marika VonSeggern commented on the triangular by saying, “We played really good during both games, especially for having over a week with no games. During the Wayne game, Wayne hit very well against us, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get Wayne’s pitcher figured out. During the Boone Central game, the girls played a great game all the way around. They kept level heads the entire game and came up with some big stops. Elizabeth Hammer came up with huge outs from the outfield to keep Boone out of scoring position.”

The Lady Jays next game will be a triangular on Thursday, September 24, at the Pierce Softball Complex.
