Lady Jays Softball

Pierce Lady Jays Take on Boone Central Tournament

The Pierce Lady Jays softball team boogied their way down to Albion for the Boone Central/Newman Grove tournament this Saturday, September 5, finishing 1-2 on the day.

To start off the day Pierce took a loss against Polk County (Stromsburg) by the score 10-0. Madelyn Hanson, Elizabeth Hammer, and Sarah Miller all had one hit that game to help the Lady Jays out.

The second game of the day was against Boone Central. The Lady Jays took a close loss with the score 8-5. Aiding Pierce with hits were senior Sarah Miller with two, freshmen Trina Wetzel and Hanson with one each, sophomore Addison Sporleder with one and senior Ashton Oestriech with one. 

The Lady Jays, however, turned their day around with a win of 12-1 against Centura-Central Valley. Aiding the team with hits this game were Hanson, Miller, Hammer, and Mackenzie Parsons with each one hit. Sporleder also aided the team with two hits that game as well. Also aiding the Lady Jays with base runs were Isabelle Skrdla, Sporleder, and Hammer. 

Catch the lady jays play again Tuesday, September 15, in a triangular at Boone Central.


Softball Takes Loss

On Thursday, September 3, the Pierce Lady Jays softball team traveled to O’Neill and took a tough loss to the Lady Eagles with an ending score of 4-13. 

In the first inning, the score was 0-2, the second inning there was a score was 0-6 in favor the Lady Eagles, the third there was a score of 1-9, and lastly, in the fourth inning, the score was 4-13. (No additional stats were available at press time.)

Head coach Marika VonSeggern said, “I am proud of us not giving up. We stayed in the game the entire time when they easily could have given up after the first two innings.”

The Lady Jays will travel to Boone Central on Tuesday, September 15.


Softball Team Earns First Win

On Tuesday, September 1, this beautiful evening was a great way for the Pierce Lady Jays softball team to win their first game of the season against West Point-Beemer with an ending score of 20-12. 

They played five innings and at the end of the first inning Pierce led 3-1, the second inning Pierce scored 2 additional runs making the score 5-1. In the third inning, the Lady Jays again held the Lady Cadets scoreless and the end of the inning score was 8-1. During the fourth inning, the Lady Jays added 4 runs while the Lady Cadets added 5 to their total and the end of the inning score was 12-6 in favor of the Lady Jays. Lastly during the fifth inning, although both teams added runs, the final score was 20-12 in favor of the Pierce Lady Jays. 

Some highlights from the game were freshman Madelyn Hanson hitting a home run, which got them three points, and sophomore, Addison Sporleder and Hanson getting a double each. 

Freshman Trina Wetzel also struck out three people. 

Head coach Marika VonSeggern said, “I am overall very impressed with them, we were able to play a game where we got ahead and were able to stick with it, and they were able to have a mindset to finish, which is huge.”

The Lady Jays will travel to Boone Central on Tuesday, September 15.
