Five Advance to District History Day

In addition to the twelve Pierce High School qualifiers from first semester, five additional PHS seniors will compete in the district National History Day competition on Saturday, March 6 at Dana College in Blair.  The local competition was held at Pierce High School on Friday, February 12.  Brittney Dinkel, Joey Koehn, Kenley Silhacek, Kaelee Stuchlik, and Meghan Vogt are the second semester qualifiers.

Dinkel qualified with her individual board exhibit entitled “Ammonia Synthesis:  Innovation with a Profound Impact on War and Agriculture.”  Her project discusses Fritz Haber’s development of ammonia, used for fertilizers and explosives, and the impact they had on our nation.

Koehn, Silhacek, and Vogt qualified for districts with their group board exhibit entitled “Innovation of Photography:  The Impact and Change of Child Labor.”  Their project discussed how Louis Hine’s pictures led to passage of many substantial child labor laws in our country.

Stuchlik qualified with her individual performance entitled “FDR’s Innovated New Deal Brought Hope and Recovery to a Desperate Nation and Continues to Impact a Nation’s Values.”  Her performance demonstrates the impact of the depression in America and the changes that the New Deal programs brought to millions of American citizens with the election of President Franklin Roosevelt.

Students who place in the top three at districts will then move on to the state competition on Saturday, April 17, at Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln.  If they place in the top two at state, they are eligible to compete at the national level at the University of Maryland this summer, June 12 through June 17.
