FFA Members Attend District Proficiency Evaluation

by Caleb Erickson
February 09, 2010

The Pierce High FFA members went to Crofton to attend the Nebraska FFA District Proficiency Evaluation on the morning of Saturday, February 6. Every member who went had completed a proficiency application, and these were evaluated. The proficiency is a lengthy report in which members have to document and verify with pictures, numbers, and writing all the hours put into work or projects they have done for the whole year in their specific categories of agriculture-related enterprise. The proficiencies are very thorough. Members must account for the hours working, calculate the money they have made from their work, and even account for hours of sleeping and at school.

The Pierce FFA members all did very well at the reviews in areas ranging from Beef Production to Home and Community Development. Melanie Bernhardt got a gold-1 medal in Equine Science – Placement. Chelsea Asmus, Cody Schulz, and Haley Oestreich all received gold-2 medals. Asmus received it in Floriculture – Entrepreneurship/Placement, Schulz received it in Beef Production – Entrepreneurship, and Oestreich received it in Poultry Production – Entrepreneurship/Placement. These students all qualified for state competition.

Colby Krueger received a gold medal in Diversified Agricultural Production - Entrepreneurship/Placement. Bernhardt also received a silver medal in Beef Production – Placement. Shane Thayer got a silver medal in Diversified Agriculture. Shane Asmus and Casey Asmus both received a bronze medal in Beef Production – Placement. Colby Johnson received a participation award for Home and/or Community Development - Entrepreneurship/Placement.

The top three medals in each proficiency in the district advance to state, where they will compete with other FFA members from all over Nebraska.
