Sydney Erickson Recognized for Her First Place Finish

by Megan Druyor

On November 18, Sydney Erickson was recognized during the Commissioner's Recognition at the State Capitol. Commissioner's Recognition is an event held by the Nebraska Commissioner of Education to recognize students who have excelled in their Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). At the event, members of the Nebraska CTSOs such as FCCLA, FFA and FBLA were recognized for their achievement in their competitive events at their National Leadership Conferences. At the event, Erickson had the opportunity to announce the Nebraska FCCLA's outstanding national competitors. She was also recognized for placing first in her STAR event, Job Interview, at the National Leadership Conference, earning a $1,000 scholarship. Her interview was for a junior golf instructor.

Erickson, the FCCLA president said, “It was great to practice for my future job interviews, and it was an amazing opportunity to get the scholarship as well. As the FCCLA president it was an amazing opportunity to represent Nebraska, it was also awesome to recognize others who placed.”

Angie Brodersen, the FCCLA adviser said, “I was incredibly proud of her and felt that it’s always exciting to see a student get recognized for their accomplishments. As an adviser, I offer students guidance, necessary materials, and constructive criticism. Truly a student’s level of competitiveness in competitions such as STAR, is based on their own expectations and willingness to put in the work. Just like in the classroom; you get out what you put in. Go out and discover your potential; you may be surprised what you are capable of.”

The Nebraska lieutenant governor, Mike Foley, greeted everyone and welcomed people who were there. He also congratulated all of the people who got recognized. Also present was Madeline Wittstruck National FCCLA Vice President of Finance, and she talked about FCCLA.
