Bluejays Sweep Longhorns in First Round of Playoffs

by Autumn Hanna

The Pierce Bluejays took on the Chase County Longhorns for the first game of the Class C1 football playoffs. The Longhorns had to travel five and a half hours to the Pierce field Friday, November 1, for the 4 p.m. game. The Bluejays ended the night with eight total touchdowns, allowing the Longhorns only four touchdowns.

To kick off the game in the first quarter, the Bluejays scored three touchdowns. The first touchdown was made by Carson Oestreich with a one yard run to the end zone. Chaden Roth made the extra point for Jays with a field goal. The next touchdown was a four yard run made by Jeremiah Kruntorad, followed by a kick by Roth. Wrapping up the first quarter, Garret Meier ran 21 yards to make the third touchdown for Pierce. Roth’s extra point kick again was good. The quarter’s score ended 21-0.

In the second quarter, there were a total of three touchdowns for Pierce. Oestreich made the first touchdown of the second quarter as well with an 89 yard run to bring the score for the Jays to 27 with an extra point kick by Roth. The next six points were scored by Brett Tinker with a six yard run. The extra point was made by Roth. Tinker made another touchdown for Pierce with a 36 yard run, followed by another good kick by Roth.

Coming into the game after halftime, the boys made one touchdown. This touchdown was a 42 yard run by Oestreich and then a kick point by Roth.

In the final quarter, there was one more touchdown made by junior David Dale with a one yard run. The boys ended the game with 55 points to the Longhorn’s 28. The Bluejays had a total of 258 rushing yards.

Senior Carson Oestreich commented on the game. “The team played great, we were well prepared, and we are ready for next week.”

Head coach Mark Brahmer commented, “We were happy with our overall performance and our execution. Our guys played hard up front on the offensive and defensive line which helped us control the line of scrimmage and dominate in our run game and take away their ability to run. We were also efficient in our passing game. Even though we don’t throw it a lot, we must be effective when we do and make defenses pay for loading the box. As we look to next week’s game against Ord, we have a tremendous opportunity to prove to everyone that we can beat a very good team two times in the same season.”
