Girl’s Wrestling Underway at Pierce High
by Brynnlee Marks
Something new to Pierce High this year is girls wrestling. The state of Nebraska proposed girls wrestling back in November which from there made it all the way through the legislature to the representative assembly in April. Girls wrestling isn’t an NSAA sport at the moment, due to losing the vote by one, but there is a great chance that it will be next year or years to come.
The coaches this year for girls are Tyler Legate, Sonia Legate, Les Painter, and the rest of the boys wrestling coaches.
Coach T. Legate comments, “I hope eventually someday we will add it, but right now we are gauging interest in girls who want to do it.” He also adds, “We might have 4 or 5 who come out and practice alongside the boys and just get introduced to the sport. So, if it does become a sanctioned sport then our school has to decide.”
A meeting took place on October 30 for girls 7-12 that were interested in wrestling. The girl’s wrestling team consists of 8-10 girls as of right now. Experienced wrestler, Maggie Painter says, “It definitely is going to be a change for Nationals, but I think it will be a great opportunity and will be really fun.”
The first optional practice will be held on November 5 after school.
