Lady Jays Take Defeat in First Mid-State Game

The Pierce Lady Jays went up against the Norfolk Catholic Knights Monday, October 21, at Pierce High School. The Lady Knights swept the Lady Jays in three sets, 0-3 for Pierce.

Pierce started the night off with the serve. Going back to the serve line was outside hitter Morgan Moeller. Throughout the set the Lady Jays struggled with errors. The Knights took the first set 7-25. In the second set the Lady Jays shook off their previous errors and pushed more points. They fell short and the Knights took that set as well 16-25. Finally in the third set the Jays improved again. In the end though the Lady Knights took the final set 17-25, winning the game.

Leading the Lady Jays in kills for the night was outside hitter M. Moeller with six. The other outside hitter for the Jays, Zoe Brenden, had five kills as well. Three of the servers had 100% for the night, and those girls were Kenzie Moeller, Brielle Unseld, and Tazlynn Sporleder. Cayce Carlson and Brenden both had a total of two blocks each for the night. K. Moeller picked up 26 digs through out the game.

Head coach Brittney Weber says, “Norfolk Catholic is a very good team. We knew that to stop their attack we would have to be better at serving, passing, and out of system. To their credit, they are very good at all of those things. I was happy with our effort and thought we played hard. We won’t focus on this loss too long. Our attention needs to be on O’Neill in round two.”

Kenzie Moeller also says, “They were a good team, but I felt like we didn’t come out strong. When playing a good team like Norfolk Catholic, we need to be on our best game and focus. I thought we tried to stay positive as much as we could, but we got to come out stronger these last games of the season.”

The junior high volleyball teams took on Plainview for the last game of the season on Monday, October 21, where the A, B, and C teams all lost to the Pirates at Plainview High School.

The A team put on a tough fight against the Pirates, but unfortunately for them, it was not quite enough to take down Plainview. The Lady Jays ended on top during the first set, 25-19. Plainview defeated Pierce in the second and third sets, with a score of 14-25 and 12-15.

Plainview won against Pierce in the second game played in two sets by the B team. The first set ended with a score of 11-25, Plainview on top. The ending score of the second set was 17-25.

Pierce’s C team lost once again to Plainview, 2-0. By the end of the first set, the Pirates were in the lead 5-25. Similarly, the second set ended 3-25.

Coach Angie Schroeder said, “Defensively, we played really well. We passed the ball up very well and got some great sets and attacks, but we just fell a little short with some missed serves at inopportune times.”

Eighth-grader Maggie Painter summarized the season by saying, “I feel like we have improved a lot throughout the season. Our serving was really good during the game. It has just been really cool to watch our development over the season.”
