The Pierce Elementary Library has New Centers
by Megan Druyor
The elementary has new centers in the library for the students who are reading. Ann Daudt, the elementary librarian, started the new centers this year and is going to be changing them monthly. The centers are open to all of the students during the day.
Daudt says, “I started centers this year to make the library more interactive and user friendly. The centers rotate monthly and are open to all students during the day. Kindergarten through second grade use the centers at the end of their library class time. They are divided into groups and spend about 10 minutes at a center.”
The centers are based on a certain theme, they are based off of the stories that are being read during a library class.
Carmen Emory, the library aide, says, “The centers are to make the library seem more fun. The students love having the centers and are always asking Ann if they could have the centers every day. She normally changes the groups up so the students can be more involved with each other. They do many activities, they have a chalkboard and marker board table. There are also board games that were donated by parents or other teachers.” In the centers they have activities that include puzzles, marker tables, chalk tables, reading centers, legos/creative stations, research questions, digital books and videos, iPad activities, coding, STEM and art activities. The activities help the students feel interactive and friendly with other students. The library has just started the Halloween and fall themes. The next theme will change November 1 and will be Thanksgiving and Native American related.
