Lady Jays Softball

Softball Girls Take on Highway 91 in Districts

by McKenna Shonka

Lady Jays had their first game of districts on Wednesday, October 9, against Highway 91 on the Bluejays home field. The game ended with Lady Jays 0-9 in favor of Highway 91.

Starting off in the first inning the Lady Jays scored zero runs and their opponent scored a total of five runs. Going into the second inning Pierce had no runs and Highway 91 had one run throughout the inning. The Lady Jays had no runs and Highway 91 had two runs total in the third and last inning of the game.

Every player on the team all had two plate appearances throughout the game. Senior, Kaycie Druyor got on base twice against the Highway 91 pitchers. With one base hit was Ashton Oestreich for the Lady Jays.

Junior, Elizabeth Hammer stated, “One positive is our fielding I thought was really good, we didn't make many mistakes as we normally do.”

Coach Marika VonSeggern's overall comments, “Our first game was our rockiest. We struggled to get things going offensively and then in the first inning we gave up 5 runs. The next couple innings, the girls turned it around defensively and made some great stops. However, our batting just wasn't going our way.”

Lady Jays Compete at District Softball

By Sarah Fenton

The Lady Jays softball team competed in districts at their home field on October 9. The second game they played was against Madison. The game went to seven innings and the final score was 6-7 with Pierce finishing victorious.

As the Lady Jays went into the first inning, Madison scored with three runs and the Lady Jays didn’t get any. In the second inning, no team scored. The Lady Jays scored one in the third inning, but Madison fought back with two runs and the fourth inning consisted of Madison scoring one run and the Lady Jays with nothing. But soon enough, the Lady Jays fought back totaling four runs in the fifth inning, leaving Madison with none. Still fighting, the Lady Jays scored two more runs in the sixth inning while not letting Madison rack up points. In the seventh inning, no teams scored and the Lady Jays won the game with Bluejay spirit.

Coach Marika VonSeggern says, “I am really proud of how the girls stepped up at the end of the game and improved their defense. I am also SUPER proud of how they switched to playing a short game offensively. This game really stood out to me because they executed it flawlessly.”

The Lady Jays were able to play another game against O’Neill since they won against Madison, but sadly this one didn’t go as well as the Lady Jays planned. The game went to five innings with not much luck throughout. O’Neill scored two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, no points in the third inning, one run in the fourth, and three in the fifth. Sadly, the Lady Jays didn’t score in any of these innings. While this game wasn’t as good as the last, we know that they still tried their hardest and pushed till the end.

Addison Sporleder, who pitched in all of the games says, “Overall, I thought we didn’t play that bad. We did finish hard though. After the game, it was sad to see the season has come to an end, but I couldn’t be more proud of our team. Everyone improved on something individually. As a team, I could for sure see major improvements from our first game to our last.”

The Lady Jays finished with a 2-23 record.
