“Oh How the Tables have Turned”

by Faith Lubischer

On Monday, September 23, the boys handed their football pads over to the girls, so they could participate in a powderpuff flag football game, and later that week on Saturday, September 28, the girls gave their knee pads to the boys, so they could play some volleyball.

These powderpuff games were put together by a student council committee. Head of the committee, Caydan Retzlaff, says the goal of the powderpuff games was, “to get students involved in activities they may not have otherwise done.”

In order to reach this goal, the committee members had to prepare many things. They were in charge of finding referees, scorekeepers, and coaches for all games, bringing flags for the girls, designing t-shirts for each team, collecting t-shirt money, and being at the event when it took place.

On the night of the flag football game, teams were split up by grade. Seniors and sophomores were on one team and were given orange shirts, and juniors and freshmen were on the other team and were given purple shirts. The junior and freshman team, who called themselves the “purple devils” ended up winning the game by two touchdowns. Junior, McKenna Shonka, says her favorite part of powderpuff was, “jumping, laughing, and smiling with the team when we scored.”

Because of the odd number of kids signed up for volleyball in each class, the teams were mixed up randomly, but each team played two games.
