Legate Outstanding Nebraska Language Arts Teacher

In a ceremony at the Plum Creek Literacy Festival held in Seward on Saturday, September 21, Melissa Legate received the Leadership Development Award from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)/Nebraska English Language Arts Council (NELAC) Outstanding Nebraska Language Arts Teacher.

The NELAC is an affiliate of NCTE, an organization who is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.

Legate is eligible to represent Nebraska at the Conference on English Leadership (CEL), which is the national conference for NCTE. The conference is in Baltimore, Maryland, in late November.

Mark Brahmer, high school principal, remarked, “Any school is as good as the instructors that are in it. We feel very fortunate that we’ve got a great staff. We’ve got one of the best English instructors in the state of Nebraska, as alluded by this award. I knew from the first couple of days when I watched her teach as a first year person that she was going to be really good, and she obviously has lived up to that.”

Legate was originally notified that she would receive this award in May. The award recognizes her dedication to the teaching profession and language arts instruction.
