Bluejay Football

Pierce Defeats Ord in Close Game

by Sarah Miller

Pierce was forced to use another game plan because of an early injury to their quarterback, Dalton Freeman who left the game early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. After the injury, Pierce turned to Chaden Roth and Carson Oestreich to take over the quarterback role. In the end the Bluejays were able to maintain the lead and win 28-14.

In the first quarter, the Bluejays were able to score 6 points. David Dale ran in a 6 yard  touchdown for the first score of the game.

In the second quarter, the Jays were able to hold the Ord Chanticleers to zero points while the Bluejays also didn’t score.

In the third quarter, the Jays were able to put 15 points up on the board. Oestreich ran a 56 yard  run in for the second score of the game. After the score the team was able to put in a 2 point conversion to make the score 14-0. Brett Tinker also had a big 43 yard rushing touchdown. After the touchdown Roth’s PAT was good.

In the fourth quarter, the Bluejays managed to put up 7 points. Tinker scored another touchdown from 1 yard out, making the score 28-14.

The Bluejays were able to get 550 total yards with 527 rushing yards and 23 yards in the air..

Throughout the adversity the Jays were able to fight on. Oestreich, a senior, commented on their adversity, “All of my teammates knew we were losing a lot but everyone stepped up to do their part a little extra losing Dalton Freeman.”

Coach Mark Brahmer also commented on the adversity they saw, “We were really proud of our young men for how well they fought through a tremendous amount of adversity.”

Oestreich also commented on how he felt his team performed as a whole, “The team did great. Even with all the adversity we faced in that game we kept plugging away, never letting it get to us or put our heads down. I think further down the road all this adversity will help our team and make us stronger in the future.”

Coach Brahmer also talked about how they performed as a team, “In all my years of coaching and playing, over 35 years worth, I've never seen a game like that. In the end, our guys kept battling and were able to pull out a hard-fought victory over a very good football team.”

The next varsity game is on Friday, September 20, away against Columbus Scotus.

JV Football Kicks Off at Scotus

by Megan Druyor

The Pierce JV football team kicked off their season in Columbus against Scotus. Player Dylan Riedel said, “The first 2 quarters we didn’t do very good we had a lot of turnovers, but the 3rd and 4th quarter we played well.”

Although the JV team won 48-0 they need to work more on their offense and work on not turning over the ball. As said by Grant Doerr, the JV football Coach, “The boys need to have better execution on offense and not turning the ball over.” They have their next game on September 16 at Hartington Cedar Catholic, the game time starts at 6:00. Good Luck JV football!
