Lady Jays Softball

Pierce High Triumphs Over Madison-Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family

In a 3 hour 30 minute game, the Pierce Bluejays battled Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay in softball just narrowly beating them by 1 with the final score of 18-17. The Jays had a fantastic night of batting. When asked about what the team did best last night Hannah Whitmore replied quickly, “Our hits were really good.” 

Freshman Addison Sporleder led the team in runs with 5. Sporleder was followed closely by senior Kaycie Druyor, who had 3. Madison Altwine, Isabelle Skrdla, and Elizabeth Hammer all had 2 runs. Mariah Eckert, Whitmore, Makinzie Parsons, and Ashton Oestreich each had 1. Eckert and Sporleder each had 1 fielding error. Whitmore had 2 errors. Oestreich thought the team worked together well saying, “Our effort and positivity through our one bad inning really brought everything together to be able to come out on top in the end.” Overall the Jays had a great night. 

They play next on September 21 at 10 am at the O’Neill Invite.


Pierce JV Softball Plays MHLHS in a Close Game.

On Thursday the Pierce JV softball team played a combined team, Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay and lost to MHLHS 1-2. In the game the Lady Jays had 7 outs and 2 strikeouts total.

When asked what could they improve on Hannah Whitmore said “pitching and batter’s box.”

In the second inning they had 2 outs, one strikeout, Brooke Reddest made it to first base and Addison Sporleder made the first point. 

In the second inning MHLHS made their first 2 points. In the 3rd inning Mariah Eckert was the only one to make it to 1st base. In the 4th inning they made 3 outs and Megan Druyor and Addison Sporleder made it to first base. This concluded the game making the final score 1-2, with MHLHS winning the game.

The next game will be Tuesday, September 17 at Battle Creek at 6:30 p.m.


Lady Jays Struck Out Against GACC

The Pierce Bluejays softball team traveled to West Point and took a loss on Tuesday, September 10, against Guardian Angels Central Catholic. The game ended with a score of 0-13. 

Starting off in the first inning the Lady Jays scored no runs and GACC had nine total runs. During the second inning, Bluejays scored no runs and Guardian Angels ran in four runs. Going into the last inning both teams ended up scoring no runs for their team. 

The only stat during this game was Kaycie Druyor with a triple for the Lady Jays. 

The highlight of the game Coach Marika VonSeggern stated was, “Our biggest highlight would be Kaycie Druyor's triple she hit. Another highlight would be the team's willingness to keep working even though the score isn't in our favor.”

Varsity player, Ashton Oestreich states, “That overall we didn’t come with our minds completely set on the game, and that showed between the JV and Varsity games. Effort is the one thing that the coaches stress during practice, and we are still working to bring 110% effort from everyone during practice and games.”

Tuesday, September 24 is the upcoming game for the Lady Jays against Twin River, which is being played at the Twin River High School at 6:15 p.m. 


JV Lady Jays Fall to GACC

The Lady Jays JV softball team traveled to West Point to face Guardian Angels Central Catholic on September 10 for the fifth game of the season. Although the Lady Jays fought hard, they fell to the Bluejays 10-0. 

Sophomore, Makinzie Parsons says,”I feel like we could have gotten better at bats, and we definitely need to communicate more.” 

In the first inning, the Lady Jays scored 0 runs and let the Bluejays scored 7. Entering the second inning, the Lady Jays came short with 0 runs, but held the Bluejays to 1 run. In the third inning, the Lady Jays scored 0 runs, and the Bluejays had 2. Freshman, Megan Druyor, was the only one to make an on-base appearance. Junior, Hannah Whitmore, says, “The game could have been better. We need to improve on pitching and getting out of the batter’s box.” 

The Lady Jays next game is on, Tuesday, September 17 at 6:30 in Pierce.


Pierce Softball Take on Cardinals

Pierce High School’s softball team played a challenging game against the Boone Central/Newman Grove team on September 7. 

The girls played a total of 3 innings; in the first inning, Cardinals made 7 runs and Pierce scored 0. The second inning neither team scored any runs, but the third inning Cardinals made 5 more runs totalling up to 12 runs for the game. Madison Altwine and Addison Sporleder were pitching for the games. Junior, Ashton Oestreich, 3rd and 1st baseman said, “Overall I think we played very well. Albion just hit the ball very well. We cut down our errors by half.” 

The team made up 9 plate appearances (PA) and 9 at bats (AB). At the end of the game Cardinals took the win of 12-0 against Pierce. 

Also playing Saturday, Pierce took on the Polk County team from Stromsburg but were defeated with a score of 7-5. Senior, Kaycie Druyor 2nd and 3rd baseman said, “In this game we really showed our coach that we can compete with a team. This game was definitely the best game we’ve played defensively and offensively. We are working to improve!” The team made 25 PA, 21 AB. Of the team’s five runs,Oestreich scored two. Six team hits were made with Elizabeth Hammer making 2, and 3 RBI’s altogether. Also pitching were Altwine and Sporleder. The Lady Jays had 8 assists, Sporleder helping the team with 3 and only 2 errors.
