Pierce Holds a Girls Golf Invite at the Community Golf Course.

by Sarah Fenton

Pierce hosted the golf invite this week on a beautiful Nebraska day with low scores and even high levels of improvement. Shooting a total score of 400, the team placed 3rd with the help from Sydney Erickson, Rebecca Albrecht, Keli Shermer, and Zaylah Pfanstiel. Sydney Erickson shot a whopping score of 83 making her place 3rd in the meet. Rebecca Albrecht placed 14th with an exact score of 100. Keli Shermer shot 108 placing 20th and Zaylah Pfanstiel shot 109 placing 21st. Hannah Magnussen received 45th place by shooting a score of 142.

Head Coach Melinda Stelling says, “The girls did really well today - 3rd place as a team, 3 girls medaled, and several had personal best scores!  It was exciting to see such improvement in a short period of time!”

That wasn’t the only great feedback we heard from the meet, Sydney Erickson also says, “Overall, I thought the meet was a success. Many of the girls made huge improvements on Saturday and that definitely showed in our team placing and our scores.” It’s great to hear that the girls golf team did so good this weekend and we hope they continue improving.

Lady Jays Golf Takes on the O’Neill Course

by Morgan Blecher

Despite playing on rain drenched course, the Pierce Lady Jays competed in the O’Neill Invite on September 12 and shot a total of 226. Sydney Erickson placed 1st and shot a 49 overall, while Rebecca Albrecht shot a 54 and placed 2nd. 4th place went to Keli Shermer shooting a 61. Zaylah Pfansteil received 5th place and shot a total of 62. Hannah Magnussen shot a 71, Alena Peters shot a 78, Julia Polt an 85, and Katelyn Gubbels a 91.

Coach Stelling says, “Overall, I was pleased with the way the girls played today. I thought they handled the windy conditions well.” Stelling also thought that this meet was a good help to prepare the Lady Jays for the home invitational on Saturday.

Golfer Hannah Magnussen says, “I feel like I did okay, but I could have done a better job, and I need to work on getting one or two puts on each hole, and I need to work on my drives.”

Look out for the Lady Jays as they compete in the varsity golf triangular at the Wayne Country Club on September 19.

by Gina Wragge

The Pierce girls’ golf team ventured up to Hartington to battle in a triangular against Hartington Cedar Catholic and Norfolk Catholic on Tuesday, September 10. The Lady Jays received 3rd place with a team score of 220.

The top four individual scores for Pierce went toward the team score. Individually, Sydney Erickson was the top placer for Pierce in 2nd place with a score of 47. Just one stroke behind Erickson, Becca Albrecht tied for 3rd with a score of 48. Zaylah Pfanstiel shot a 60, and Keli Shermer finished with a 65. Also competing for Pierce was Hannah Magnussen with a 72. Alena Peters and Julia Polt both scored a 73. Finally, Katelyn Gubbels finished with an 89.

Pfanstiel and Magnussen both had all-time bests at this triangular. Sharing her overall thoughts about how she performed, Pfanstiel said, “Pretty good, I could have had less putting strokes but overall good.” She was also excited to achieve her personal best.

Coach Melinda Stelling said, “We’ve been working a lot on improving our chipping and putting.” She also shared how she felt about the triangular, “Overall, they did probably as well as I expected them to and I was pretty pleased with the outcome.”

The girls’ golf team hosted their next meet on Saturday, September 14, starting at 9:00am.
