Speech Team Competes at State

Seven high school speech team members along with their coaches Melissa Legate, Junior Aguilar, and Kate Bretschneider traveled to UNK in Kearney to compete at state on Thursday, March 21.

After two highly competitive preliminary rounds competing against the best competitors in Class C-1, four of the Bluejays’ eight events advanced to finals, leaving them with a total of five medals as a team. Macie Timm got 3rd in entertainment speaking, Mark Venticher got 4th in extemporaneous speaking, Maiya Baumann got 6th in humorous prose, and Janae Arens and Dylan Delka placed 6th in duet acting. With these results, the Bluejays finished in 7th place as a team.

Other Bluejays competing and earning superior ratings at state were Katrina Meier in informative speaking; Shelby White also in informative; Janae Arens, Dylan Delka, Katrina Meier, Macie Timm, and Mark Venteicher in OID, and the second OID group of Maiya Baumann, Zane Gleason, Greta Guercilena, Elizabeth Harris and Cayden Retzlaff.

Coach Melissa Legate said, “It’s always exciting to end our season with some state medals. The day was, of course, filled with a few heartbreaks, but I could not be prouder of  how these eleven kids performed.”
