Pierce High Hosts Career Day

by Elizabeth Hammer

The Pierce senior high students took part in a career exploration event to see, find, or expand their interests in different careers on Tuesday, March 19.

The day started with a presentation from Mike Flood about finding a career that suits a person’s interests and passions, regardless of how they do in school.

After the presentation, students were put into two 45-minute career panels based on their career interests and preferences. The panels included careers that spanned many disciplines, including environmental and agricultural systems, business, communication and information systems, health sciences, human services and resources, and industrial/manufacturing/engineering systems.

The flooding throughout the state caused some complications with the event in terms of the panelists’ ability to travel, but 21 out of 54 scheduled speakers made it to present. In each group, there were three to five speakers hailing from around the area and even some from Omaha and Chicago. Panelists answered questions about the education and experience required for their jobs, their duties and favorite parts of their careers, and various opportunities in their fields.

Guidance Counselor Mary Birch, who organized the event along with guidance department member Amy Lambrecht, said, “I was very concerned about it not coming off due to flooding and not being in school to prepare, but I think it was very successful and everyone learned something.”
