Jazz Band Competes at UNO Jazz Festival

by Angelica Volquardsen

Pierce High’s jazz band traveled to Omaha on Friday, February 22, to compete at the UNO Jazz Festival. Overall, Pierce received an excellent rating and was one point away from receiving a superior.

There were 40 bands that traveled to Omaha for the festival, including a jazz band from the Jaseps Vitols Latvian Music Academy. Pierce, along with other schools, was able to watch the Latvian band perform. Throughout the day the students were able to attend activities such as the blues clinic, watch other jazz bands perform, and participate in a one-on-one rhythm section.

At the end of the day, musicianship awards were given out for solos and outstanding musicianship. Pierce students who received this award were Katrina Meier, Dylan Delka, Abbey Sedlacek, Jacob Pedersen, Brianna Aguilera, Mason Sindelar, and Alexus Sindelar.

Band director Michael Sindt said, “Overall, our performance was as good as we have done this year. We did more challenging music than usual, and we got some great tips from clinicians. The rhythmic section also worked with the UNO faculty one-on-one, and a few students attended the blues clinic.”
