by Autumn Hanna

The varsity Lady Jays played against the O’Neill Eagles Friday, February 15, at Pierce High School in the subdistrict final. The Lady Jays unfortunately lost the game 24-36 to end their season.

To kick off the game, the Lady Jays were neck-and-neck with the Eagles. Maggie Brahmer went to the line and made a free throw adding one point. Marie Stone then threw up a two-point shot. Brahmer followed with four more points by making two two-pointers. The Eagles were just barely in the lead in the first quarter with the score being 7-8.

The second quarter continued in similar fashion with both teams staying right with one another. The Lady Jays got going with Stone draining a three pointer. Popping up a two pointer was Bramher. Abbey Fuerhoff then added another three points firing a three into the basket. Kayla Simmons brought the first half to a wrap by making two two-pointers, bringing the score to a tie 19-19.

Coming out from the halftime break, there was a lull in the Lady Jays’ offense with Pierce making only one point from Kenzie Moeller with a free throw. The Eagles worked defensively and offensively and made seven points to bring the score up to 20-26.

In the final quarter, the Lady Jays could not catch the Eagles. Moeller made all of the Lady Jays’ last four points of the night. The Eagles surpassed the Lady Jays with ten points in the last quarter, bringing the final score to 24-36.

The leaders in scoring were Brahmer with seven points, and Kenzie Moeller and Marie Stone  with five each. Brahmer and Simmons led in rebounds with seven and six, respectively. Brahmer had the most blocks with five. Stone had two steals under her belt. Moeller also had the most deflections. Zoe Brenden and Moeller both had two assists in the game.

This game brought the Lady Jays’ season to an end with a record of 12-11.

Reflecting on the season, Coach Darren Sindelar said, “Throughout the season, I thought the girls competed. Our win-loss record may not be what we wanted it to be, but I felt we improved as a team throughout the year. We were competitive in all our games.
