Bobby Truhe Educates Pierce High

by Angelica Volquardsen

Bobby Truhe, an attorney from Lincoln who specializes in school law, traveled to Pierce on Tuesday, January 8, to speak to the Pierce High students and faculty.

He was invited to Pierce Jr-Sr high school because to be a nationally certified digital citizenship school, the school must host a minimum of two speakers or programs per year that educate parents, students, and teachers about topics of importance when using digital devices. Mr. Truhe spoke about online dangers and the result of inappropriate behaviors and postings on the internet.

Truhe spoke about the dangers of online predators through gaming, and chatting websites. He showed numerous real-life cases and situations where young students were in contact with someone they didn’t know. That person pretended to be someone they weren’t and put the young student in danger. Truhe also spoke about school bullying and online bullying anywhere and the consequences of that behavior. He also spoke about a new law in Nebraska passed by the 2018 Legislature which is known as the “Intimidation by Telephone Call or Electronic Communication.” This means it is unlawful to use obscene language, mentally injure others, threaten people, or to extort people for money. The law was passed because the legislature felt the need to put tighter controls on these behaviors that are cruel and harmful.

School counselor Mary Birch said, “To me, the most interesting part of the assembly was his telling the kids exactly what to do if they were ever sent a nude picture to avoid legal trouble. Also, I think the assembly made students more aware of the specific and serious consequences that can result from inappropriate texting, chatting or emailing and other negative behaviors that are so common.”
