Freshmen Take a Step into Careers

by Kailey Marks

On Tuesday, December 4, the PHS ninth graders took a trip down to the Pierce Auditorium for a day full of career exploration sponsored by the UNL Extension Office.

Students from many schools came to experience a great opportunity to go around and figure out more about the career they are looking forward to entering. Three colleges sponsoring this event were Northeast, Wayne State, and the University of Nebraska. Sixteen employers came to sponsor from different clusters and talked to the kids about certain standards it takes to succeed in that career.

This was an important event for ninth graders to get a bit of exposure to different career options and learn more about the career they want to go into. They received advice such as, “If you’re planning on going into healthcare, make sure you love people,” and, “You’ll have a leg up if you go and get some kind of education after high school.”

During the afternoon session, the students learned how to interview for a job, write a resume, and properly introduce themselves to other people. The students also took a personality test to see what kinds of careers might best fit their interests.

Guidance counselor Mrs. Mary Birch said she thought the ninth graders gained skills such as “knowing how to communicate with all different kinds of people, and the importance of education in high school and beyond high school.”

Another PHS staff members involved in the session was media specialist, Mrs. Crys Bauermeister, who said, “I think it was very successful because kids got to hear from real people and not their teachers on what the outlook would be for their future careers.” She thought the most valuable part of the day was “when employers gave their advice and said that you will be presented with changes, and you need to welcome them in your life.”
