JH Girls’ Basketball Team Battles Braves

The Pierce junior high Lady Jays played on the Battle Creek Braves’ court on Monday, November 26. The A and B team both won their games.
The A team won 25-17. In the first quarter, the Lady Jays scored six points and held Battle Creek to five. Ella Gaes scored scored two points for Pierce, and Alyssa Cederburg scored four points.
In the second quarter, the Pierce defense held Battle Creek to six points, while Morgan Moeller scored five points and Reagan Theisen scored a two to the Lady Jays’ score. Going into halftime the score was 13-11.
After halftime, Battle Creek out scored the Lady Jays and narrowed Pierce’s lead. Cederburg scored the Lady Jays’ only points in the quarter with four. The score at the end of the quarter was 17-16.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays managed to seal their win as they came out and scored eight points and held Battle Creek to only one, leaving the final score at 25-17. Addison Sporleder scored a three-pointer in the quarter, and Cederberg scored four more points to add to the score. Moeller scored one point from a free throw.
The B team then took the court and won 17-9. In the first quarter both teams scored five points. Kallie Edins and Isabelle Skrdla each scored a two-pointer, and Ciara Garcia scored one point on a free throw. Edins hit two free throws in the second quarter, and with the Bravettes unable to get past the Lady Jays’ defense, the score going into halftime was 7-5.
In the third quarter, Skrdla scored two points for the Lady Jays, and Garcia scored three points on a bucket and a free throw. The Bravettes scored just two points in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Battle Creek managed another two points, but with Pierce scoring five points, the game ended with Pierce on top 17-9. Garcia scored two points, and Edins scored three points on a two-pointer and a free throw.
Coach Brenda Fleecs said, “This game showed us how much we have improved and that we are starting to come together. We developed fundamentals and used them in the game.”
The next junior high girls’ basketball game will be Saturday, December 8, in the Wayne tournament.
