Sophomores Attend WSC Career Day

by McKenna Shonka

The Pierce High sophomore class traveled to the Wayne State College on Tuesday, October 16 for a career day.

Guidance counselor Mrs. Mary Birch said that the career day is one of her favorite activities for students to attend because it offers ideas about college and careers. She said that this day “opens new doors of opportunities for students.” The day after the field trip Mrs. Birch had already arranged a job shadow for a sophomore.

This year saw the largest number of sophomores that WSC has ever had, with 20 schools from northeast Nebraska sending students and over a hundred people presenting information about their careers.

The day was coordinated by the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and Northeast Nebraska County Extension Service. Every student who attended signed up for three career sessions and two breakout sessions. For each career, a presenter talked about the work they do, how much they get paid, and what school classes were required. The breakout sessions after lunch were to inspire students and inform them about real life in college or career. Two example sessions were “Dare to Dream” and “Coeds Tell All.” The latter featured three college girls, including one from a vocational technical college and one from a two-year community college. They gave advice to the girls in the room about how to prepare for college and what the college experience is like.

Tanner Kuper, a sophomore from Pierce, said, “I learned a lot from this career day, I have some new ideas on what I want to be, and I furthered some of my current interests. Overall, I had a good time at the career day.”
