Two Pierce Golfers Qualify for State

by Victoria Orona

Pierce High’s girl golfers went to the district golf tournament at the Norfolk Country Club on Monday, October 1. Junior Sydney Erickson placed third, and senior Samantha Svendsen placed fourth, both ladies qualifying for state.

Twelve other teams participated in the district meet, each golfer playing eighteen holes of golf. Pierce’s golfers placed sixth as a team with a total score of 476. Individually, junior Sydney Erickson placed third after a tying for first with a score of 89. Anna Kassmeier of Norfolk Catholic and Ireland Billoft or Hartington CC also carded 89’s, and the three repeated hole one for a playoff that determined the individual placing for the golfers. Kassmeier then placed first.

Senior Samantha Svendsen placed fourth with a score of 96, tying with Paige Peters of Thayer Central. Again the playoff hole decided fourth and fifth.

Sophomore  Rebecca Albrecht got 27th with a score of 123, and freshman Madisyn Hamm placed 50th with a score of 168.

The state golf meet is Monday and Tuesday, October 8 and 9 in North Platte. When asked how Pierce’s golfers will do, Coach Melinda Stelling said, “I think they have a chance to do very well. I haven’t looked at the scores of those from other teams yet, but because they did so well in our districts, I think they will compete very well at state.”
