Biology Students at Water World

Biology Students at Water World

Eleven Pierce biology students, with their teacher Mrs. Deb Koehlmoos, attended the Wonderful World of Water at Gilman Park on Wednesday, September 19. Seventeen teams competed in activities sponsored by the Natural Resource District and designed to heighten their understanding and appreciation of the environment. Pierce’s two teams placed second (tied for second) and third.

Members of the second-place team were Abigail Meier, Garret Meier, Shawn Rinkel, Faith Lubischer, Sarah Miller, and Shelby White. Members of the third-place team were Tristan Miller, Tyler Race, Abygail Streff, Mikala Stone, and MacKenzie Peters.

Activities included lessons in owls, aquatic insects, soil quality, groundwater, wildlife, tree identification, wetlands, among others. They participated in a quiz game based on their learning, and they shot water rockets they had created.

Koehlmoos said that the second place team had a wonderful rocket and were clearly in contention for best of show; however, they were beaten by a team whose rocket was an amazing two-year project. The third-place team got the “most creative” award for their rocket.

The Wonderful World of Water is an annual event in which Pierce has participated for many years, and Faith Lubischer said it was fun. “We learned a lot,” she said.
