Varsity VB Places 3rd in Wakefield Tournament

The varsity volleyball team played in Wakefield for their tournament beginning on Thursday, September 6, and wrapping up Saturday, September 8. The Lady Jays finished in 3rd place in the tournament.

For the first game that was played on Thursday, the Lady Jays played Laurel-Concord/Coleridge and defeated the Bears in three sets. In the first set, the Lady Jays won in dominant fashion 25-9. In the second set, the Lady Jays fell short 23-25 but came back to win the final set 25-23.

Against the Bears, Maggie Brahmer had the most kills with 23, followed by Rhayna Waldner with six. Abbey Fuerhoff and Tazlynn Sporleder both served at 94.7% with three and two aces, respectively. Kenzie Moeller finished the game with the 14 digs, Waldner finished with finished with 15, and Brahmer finished with 11. Kayla Simmons finished the game with 30 assists.

In the second game played on Thursday, the Lady Jays played Ponca and won two sets out of three. In the first set, the Lady Jays lost 16-25, but the Lady Jays found their momentum and came back to win the second set 25-21. In the final set, Pierce won 25-21 again.

In the game against Ponca, Brahmer led the team in attacking finishing with 13 kills, and coming in right behind Brahmer, Waldner finished with five. For serving, Brahmer and Katrina Meier both served 100% with two and one ace, respectively. Brahmer also finished the game with nine blocks. Moeller ended the game with 18 digs, and Brahmer finished with 12. Marie Stone finished with ten digs. Simmons came in with 20 assists.

For the third game, which was played on Saturday, Pierce played the Wakefield Trojans and won in two sets. In the first set, the Lady Jays finished 25-15. For the second set, Pierce won 25-21.

For the game against Wakefield, Brahmer finished with 12 kills. Brahmer and Simmons both served 100%, and Simmons had three aces. For blocking, Brahmer had six blocks, and Fuerhoff had three. Moeller finished with five digs, and Brahmer finished with three. Simmons ended the game with 19 assists.

In the fourth game, Pierce played the Lutheran High Eagles and lost in three hard-fought sets. In the first set, Pierce won 25-21. Things took a turn in the second set, as Pierce lost 22-25. In the final set, the Lady Jays fell short 17-25.

In this game, Brahmer finished with 17 kills, Meier finished with five, and Waldner also finished with five. Meier, Simmons, and Sporleder all served 100%. Meier served one ace, and Simmons had two. Meier ended the game with four blocks, and Waldner finished with three. Brahmer finished the game with 12 digs, and Moeller ended with 11. Simmons finished with 26 assists.

In the final game, Pierce faced Laurel-Concord/Coleridge in a rematch and once again came out on top to take 3rd in the tournament. In the first set, Pierce won 25-20. For the second set, the Lady Jays dominated 25-14.

Brahmer finished this game with 12 kills, and Waldner had five. Fuerhoff, Brahmer, and Sporleder all served 100% with Sporleder getting one ace. Meier also had impressive serving stats, going 10 for 11 with two aces. Brahmer had five blocks, and Fuerhoff finished with two. Moeller ended the game with seven digs, Brahmer and Meier finished with four, and Faith Lubischer finished with three. Simmons had 19 assists.

 

The next varsity volleyball game will be Thursday, September 13, against Crofton on the road.


JV Lady Jays Go to Wisner for Tournament

The JV Lady Jay volleyball team played Homer, Wisner-Pilger, and Wakefield-Allen in the Wisner Tournament on Saturday, September 8. The Lady Jays went 1-2.

The Lady Jays started the tournament off with Wisner-Pilger and lost with a score of 10-25 in first set and 14-25 in second set. Next, they played Wakefield-Allen and also lost in two sets with a score of 19-25 in the first set and 21-25 in the second set. They finished the tournament off with playing Homer and taking the win in two sets with 25-14 in the first set and 25-18 in the second set.

Looking ahead to the future of the JV season, coach Krista Meyer said, “Defense will be a main priority, as well as taking care of the ball at the net. We will also work on serving and continue to work on serving a ball that's hard to receive.”

The Lady Jays’ next game is at Crofton on Thursday, September 13.


Freshman VB Team Hosts Quad

Pierce held a freshman volleyball quad with Wayne, Battle Creek, and Madison on Thursday, September 6. Pierce went 1-2 in the quad.

In the first game, Pierce played Battle Creek, where Pierce had a hard-fought loss. The ending score of the set was 18-25. The second set also ended in a loss for the Lady Jays.

The second game the Lady Jays played was against Wayne. Pierce lost in two sets. The ending of set one was 12-25. In the second, set Pierce tried to make a comeback but could not and fell 17-25.  

In their last game, Pierce won against Madison. Pierce dominated the first set 25- 7. In the second set, Madison tried to fight back but could not manage to overtake the Lady Jays, who won 25-15.

The next freshman volleyball game will be against Crofton on Thursday, September 13, on the road.
