Lady Jays Golf Soars into New Season
by Angelica Volquardsen
Pierce High’s Lady Jay golf team is small but mighty this year, consisting of coach Melinda Stelling and four players: Samantha Svendsen, Sydney Erickson, Rebecca Albrecht, and Madisyn Hamm. The team began its season with official practice beginning on Monday, August 6.
There are two returning letter winners on the team, and they are Samantha Svendsen and Sydney Erickson.
In preparation for the golf season, the Pierce golf team has been working on fundamentals and range with the swing, chipping, putting and playing holes to get ready for the first meet. The Lady Jay golf team has set goals for this season, including to place top three in at least three invitationals, to average a team score between a 435-440, and to strive to go to state as a team.
Coach Melinda Stelling said, “Our biggest challenges for this upcoming season will be rebuilding from last year because we graduated three seniors that were part of the state qualifying team.” Despite the graduated seniors of last year's state qualifying team, there are two experienced contributors coming back from the state qualifying team from last year.
The Lady Jays’ first meet is Thursday, August 16, at O'Neill at 9 a.m.
