Speech Receives Runner-Up at Districts, Qualifies 9 for State

The speech team competed in the C1-3 district meet on Wednesday, March 14, at Hartington Cedar Catholic. The team received runner-up and is sending nine speakers to state in seven different events.

In order to qualify for state, speakers must receive one of the top three placings in the finals round. The nine students who qualified for state are Dylan Delka and Janae Arens in duet acting and OID, Macie Timm in OID, Maiya Baumann in humorous prose, Elizabeth Harris in serious prose, Abigail White in informative and OID, Shelby White in persuasive, Katrina Meier in extemporaneous speaking, and Jaden Gleason in OID.

Of the 18 events Pierce sent to the district meet, 13 qualified for finals and brought home medals. A. White received district champion in informative, Arens and Delka received 2nd in duet acting, Meier received 2nd in extemporaneous speaking, Harris received 3rd in serious prose, Baumann received 3rd in humorous prose, and the OID of A. White, Delka, Gleason, Arens, and Timm received 3rd in OID. Also medaling were Grace Spieker placing 4th in persuasive, Halle Ross placing 4th in serious prose, Peter Halsey placing 5th in humorous prose, Sydney Erickson placing 6th in informative, Mark Venteicher placing 6th in extemporaneous speaking, and the OID of Morgan Crist, Erickson, Tanner Kuper, Klarissa Norris, and Matthew Williams placing 6th.  

The state qualifiers will compete at the University of Nebraska Kearney on Thursday, March 22.
