Lady Jays Fly to Lincoln

The varsity girls basketball team traveled to Lincoln on Thursday, March 1, to take on Mitchell in the first round of state. The Lady Jays came up short against Mitchell with a score of 36-53.

The Lady Jays worked hard in the first quarter, matching the Tigers for nine points. Starting off the game was Carly Sutherland with a two-point shot, followed by Maggie Brahmer with four free throws. Adding to this was Sutherland with a three-point shot.

During the second quarter, the Lady Jays lost their momentum, scoring nine but allowing the Tigers to score 20. Scoring in this quarter was Sutherland with a two-point shot, Brahmer with two free throws and a two-point shot, and Sidney Zimmerer with a three-point shot. Going into halftime, the score was 18-29.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays put up another nine and allowed the Tigers 13. Starting off the half was Brahmer with a two-point shot and a free throw, followed by Sutherland with two two-point shots and two free throws.

The Lady Jays kept up the pace in the fourth quarter, scoring nine and holding the Tigers to 11. Scoring in this quarter were Sutherland with a two-point shot and a free throw, Brahmer with a free throw, Zimmerer with a three-point shot, and Sutherland with two free throws. The Lady Jays came up short to the Tigers with a score of 36-53.

Leading in points was Sutherland with 16, Brahmer with 14, and Zimmerer with six. Leading in rebounds were Sutherland with eight, Brahmer with five, and Zimmerer and Kenzie Moeller each with three. Leading in assists were Kayla Simmons, Zimmerer, and Brahmer each with two. Leading in steals were Sutherland with three, Brenna Collison with two, and Zimmerer and Moeller each with one.

“I told the girls after the game I was very proud of what they had accomplished this year,” said coach Darren Sindelar. “I know they were disappointed, but anytime you can make the state tournament, it is a great accomplishment.”

The Lady Jays ended their season with a record of 17-9.
