Varsity Lady Jays Advance to State Tournament

The varsity Lady Jays travelled to Central Community College in Columbus to take on Ord in the district final game, aiming to punch their ticket to state. The Lady Jays fought hard, winning over Ord with a score of 53-48.

The Lady Jays started the game off scoring 19, and holding the Chanticleers to 15. Starting off the game was Kayla Simmons with a three-point shot, followed by Brenna Collison with a two-point shot. Adding to that were Carly Sutherland with a two-point shot and a free throw, Sidney Zimmerer with a three-point shot, and Maggie Brahmer with four two-point shots.

The Lady Jays lost their momentum in the second quarter, scoring just eight and allowing the Chanticleers to score 14. Scoring in this quarter were Brahmer with a free throw, Sutherland with two free throws and a three-point shot, and Collison with a two-point shot. Going into halftime, the score was 27-29.

Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays picked up the pace, scoring 14 and holding the Chanticleers to seven. Starting off the half was Zimmerer with two three-point shots, followed by Brahmer with a two-point shot. Adding to that was Simmons with a three-point shot, and Zimmerer with another three-point shot.

During the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays kept the pace, scoring 12 and holding the Chanticleers to 12. Scoring in this quarter were Sutherland with six free throws, Simmons with a three-point shot, Collison with two free throws, and Zimmerer with a free throw. The Lady Jays took the win with a score of 53-48 and earned their ticket to state.

Leading the Lady Jays in points were Sutherland with 14, Zimmerer with 13, and Brahmer with 11. Leading in rebounds were Brahmer with 11, Sutherland with nine, and Collison with four. Leading in assists were Simmons with five, Brahmer with three, and Sutherland and Collison each with two. Leading in steals were Collison with three, and Simmons, Sutherland, Brahmer, and Zimmerer each with one.

“I felt like we would have to play the best game of the season,” said coach Darren Sindelar. “Anytime you are playing an undefeated team at this time of year, you are going to have to be playing your best basketball to compete.”

The Lady Jays will advance to the state tournament, playing on Thursday, February 29, at 2 p.m. at the Devaney Center.
