The Lady Jays took on Hartington CC at home Friday, January 12 but lost in a tight game that went into overtime with the final score being 54-57.
In the first quarter, Lady Jays caught fire as they were up 17-2, but then slowed down to end the quarter with the Lady Jays leading 19-10. Sidney Zimmerer started strong and made three threes in a row, and Kayla Simmons continued the trend by nailing another three. Carly Sutherland hit two two-pointers and a three.
In the second quarter, the Lady Jays’ offense and defense both struggled as the offense put up seven points to the Trojan’s 15. Sutherland made two free throws and a two-pointer, Brianna Aguilera also had two free throws, and Brahmer had two free throws and a two-pointer. Going into the locker room, the Lady Jays still had the lead at the end of the half, 26-25.
After half-time, the offense got its groove back and scored 14 points. Sutherland hit three two-pointers and two free throws, and Brahmer hit two two-pointers. But the Lady Jays’ defense still kept the Trojans in the game, allowing ten points to make it 40-35, with the Lady Jays still with a narrow lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays’ offense was still rolling as they scored ten points. Sutherland had three points off free throws, as well as a three, while Simmons and Brahmer each had two points. As well as the offense played, the defense was still struggling as they gave up 15 points to leave the game tied at the end of regulation 50-50.
In overtime, the Lady Jays scored only four points to Hartington’s seven, leaving the Lady Jays with a loss. Scoring the only points in OT was Sutherland with four free throws.
Leading the Lady Jays in points was Sutherland with 28. Maggie Brahmer led the team with 13 rebounds. Zimmerer and Sutherland helped the Lady Jays with five assists. Brahmer also led the team in steals with three.
The Lady Jays’ next game will be Friday, January 19, as they travel to Winnebago.
Varsity Lady Jays Soar Over Flyers

The varsity Lady Jays headed to Humphrey St. Francis to take on the Flyers on Thursday, January 11. The Lady Jays took the win with a close score of 59-55.
The Lady Jays were able to put up 11 points in the first quarter, but allowed the Flyers to put up 18. Starting off the quarter was Sidney Zimmerer with a three-point shot, followed a two-point shot each from Maggie Brahmer, Zimmerer, Brenna Collison, and Carly Sutherland.
In the second quarter, the Lady Jays had good momentum, scoring 15 points while holding the Flyers to eight to tie it up. Brahmer hit two two-point shots to start it off, and adding to that was Sutherland with a two-point shot, followed up with another two-point shot from Zoe Brenden. Sutherland then put in two free throws, and Brenden finished half with a two-point shot and two free throws. Going into halftime, the score was 26-26.
Coming out of halftime with strong momentum, the Lady Jays were able to score 16 points and hold the Flyers to eight. Starting off the half was Sutherland with four two-point shots, and contributing to that was Zimmerer with a two point shot. Sutherland hit another a two-point shot, and Brenden finished the quarter with a two-pointer of her own. The score going into the fourth quarter was 42-34.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays were able to hold their ground by scoring 17 points to the Flyers’ 21. Kicking off the fourth quarter was a two-point shot from Sutherland, a three-point shot from Zimmerer, and another two-point shot from Sutherland. Adding to that were a three-pointer and a free throw from Kayla Simmons, a two-point shot from Sutherland, and two two-point shots from each Brenden and Sutherland to finish off the game. The Lady Jays took the win with score of 59-55.
Individually, Sutherland scored 26 points, and Zimmerer scored 13. Leading rebounds was Sutherland with seven, followed by Brahmer with six and Brianna Aguilera with four. Zimmerer led the team in assists with six, followed by Sutherland with four and Simmons with three. Aguilera and Zimmerer both led the team in steals, each with two. Brahmer had three blocks, Brenden had two, and Zimmerer had one.
“This was a good win for us,” said coach Darren Sindelar. “We shared and moved the ball around better on offense. We need to get more consistent on the defensive end.”
The varsity Lady Jays’ next game will be Friday, January 19, at Winnebago.
Lady Jays Take Down Vikings

The varsity Lady Jays went up against the Lakeview Viqueens in Columbus on Tuesday, January 9. The Lady Jays defeated the Vikings 49-40.
Pierce and Lakeview were both neck-and-neck the whole first quarter, as it was tied 13-13. Helping the Lady Jays in the first, Maggie Brahmer hit three two-point shots, Carly Sutherland made two free throws and a two-point shot, and Sidney Zimmerer hit a three.
The second quarter was off to a rough start for both teams offensively, as the Lady Jays scored only two points to Lakeview’s seven. Sutherland made the only points of the quarter with a basket. Going into halftime, the Lady Jays were down 15-20.
The Lady Jays took it up a notch on offense as they were on fire in the third quarter, and defensively they took advantage of Lakeview’s weak offense, as the Lady Jays outscored the Vikings 17-4 to make it 32-24. Brahmer started it off for the Lady Jays offensively, as she scored eight points. Zimmerer nailed a three, Sutherland had another two points, and coming off the bench, Zoe Brenden nailed two free throws and made another two.
In the final quarter, both teams found their identity on offense as the Lady Jays scored 17 points to Lakeview’s 16. Brenna Collison helped boost the Lady Jays offense by scoring seven points all in the fourth quarter. Zimmerer nailed another three-pointer, Sutherland and Brahmer each scored two points, and Kayla Simmons hit three free throws. With that, the Lady Jays came out on top 49-40.
Helping the Lady Jays in scoring and rebounding was Brahmer with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Leading the Lady Jays in assists were Sutherland, Zimmerer, and Brahmer with four each. Leading in steals was Brenna Collision with four.
The Lady Jays are traveling to Winnebago for their next contest Friday, January 19.
JV Lady Jays Defeated by Trojans

The JV Lady Jays took on the Hartington Cedar Catholic Trojans on Friday, January 12, at home. Not being able to overcome the Trojans, the Lady Jays were defeated 18-32.
In the first quarter, the Trojans had the momentum. The Lady Jays scored two points, while allowing the Trojans to score ten. Zoe Brenden contributed to these two points by making a pair of free throws.
In the second quarter, the Lady Jays picked up the pace, scoring five and allowing the Trojans seven. Scoring in this quarter was Brenden with a two-pointer and a free throw, and Hailey Abler with two free throws. Going into halftime, the score was 7-17.
Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays struggled offensively, scoring only three and allowing the Trojans to score 11. Scoring in this quarter was Kenzie Moeller with a three-point shot.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays took the momentum from the Trojans. The Lady Jays scored eight and held the Trojans to four. Scoring in this quarter was Marie Stone with two free throws, Moeller with a two-point shot and a free throw, and Faith Lubischer with a three-point shot. However, the deficit proved too much, and the Lady Jays lost 18-32.
“Going into the game, I was confident,” coach Phil Weidenfeld said. “We have been playing really well, but I knew it was going to be a tough game.”
The JV Lady Jays’ next game will be Friday, January 19, at Winnebago.
JV Lady Jays Fly Past Flyers

The JV Lady Jays traveled to Humphrey on Thursday, January 11, where their offensive efforts allowed the girls to achieve a 45-36 victory over the Saint Francis Flyers.
In the first quarter, the Lady Jays trailed close behind the Flyers with a score of 11-14. Brianna Aguilera found her way to the basket a couple times in the first quarter, contributing five points including one free throw. Zoe Brenden also drove in a shot against Humphrey’s defense, adding another two points. Kenzie Moeller added a total of four points to the scoreboard for the Lady Jays in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Pierce’s offense scored seven points over the Flyers, who put up 11. Brenden went two-for-two at the free throw line, bumping up the score for the Lady Jays. Marie Stone contributed two points followed by Faith Lubischer with a three-pointer. Going into the half, the Lady Jays faced a seven-point deficit with a score of 18-25.
The Lady Jays turned the tables in the third quarter, finding their way past Humphrey’s defense and scoring 16 points. Moeller put up eight points, including two three-point shots and two free throws. Lubischer also had two three-pointers. Abigail Meier also worked her way inside for a two-point shot. The girls came back to tie the Flyers at the end of the third 34-34.
In the final quarter, the Lady Jays contained Humphrey’s defense to four points, allowing the visiting team to pull ahead and take the victory. Brenden scored six points against the Flyers followed by Stone contributing a free throw shot. Lubischer put up two shots for the Lady Jays, scoring a total four points in the fourth quarter. The final score was 45-36.
The JV Lady Jays’ next competition will be held in Winnebago against the Indians on Friday, January 19.
JV Lady Jays Conquer Viqueens

The JV Lady Jays went up against the Lakeview Viqueens in Columbus on Tuesday, January 9, and won 52-31.
The Lady Jays took control in the first quarter, scoring 11 points to Lakeview’s four. Brianna Aguilera had a three and two free throws, Zoe Brenden had three free throws, and Kenzie Moeller had a basket and two free throws.
Starting the second quarter for the Lady Jays was Aguilera with two free throws. Brenden made her way to the basket for the Lady Jays, scoring three two pointers and a free throw. Moeller contributed a three-pointer and two baskets, and Mikala Stone got her name in the book with a two-pointer. With Lakeview managing just six points, the Lady Jays were on top 29 to 10 going into the half.
Coming out of the half, Aguilera scored two free throws. Marie Stone put up two more points for the Lady Jays. Moeller added to the score with two free throws and two baskets. Abigail Meier added another two points for the Lady Jays. The Lady Jays controlled Lakeview’s offense in the third quarter to go up 41 to 19 heading into the final quarter.
Aguilera started the fourth quarter by putting in two free throws. Moeller sank a three-pointer, two free throws, and one two-pointer, and Hailey Abler added a free throw. Meier topped off the Lady Jays with a free throw, and the Lady Jays took the victory over Lakeview 52 to 31.
The JV Lady Jays’ next game will be against Winnebago on the road Friday, January 19.
Freshman-Sophomore Lady Jays Dominate Plainview Tournament

The freshman-sophomore Lady Jays headed to Plainview to battle the Plainview Pirates and the West Holt Huskies in a tournament on Saturday, January 13. The Lady Jays dominated the tournament, bringing home 1st place.
In the first half against Plainview, the Lady Jays scored 19 and held the Pirates to six. Contributing to the half were Kenzie Moeller with three three-point shots and a two-point shot, Zoe Brenden with three free throws and a two-pointer, Faith Lubischer with a two-pointer, and Mikala Stone with a free throw.
Coming out of halftime with momentum, the Lady Jays finished the game by scoring 15 more points and holding the Pirates to just six more points. Scoring in this half were Moeller with a free throw, Brenden with three free throws and a three-point shot, and Stone with a free throw. The Lady Jays finished the game with a score of 34-12.
In the second game, the Lady Jays played the West Holt Huskies. During the first half, the Lady Jays scored 19 and kept the Huskies to four. Scoring in the first half, Moeller made a three-point shot, Brenden hit three two-point shots and two free throws, Lubischer hit a two-point shot and a free throw, and Stone hit two free throws and a three-pointer.
Coming out of halftime strong, the Lady Jays scored 12 more points to the Huskies’ four. Contributing to the score were Moeller with a three-point shot and two free throws, Brenden with two two-point shots and two free throws, and Sarah Miller with a free throw. The final score of the game was 31-8.
“I felt pretty optimistic going into the tournament,” said coach Amber Engler, “Because we have been playing well and we won it last year, we wanted to do it again.”
The Lady Jays will play Monday, January 22, at Norfolk Catholic.
Freshman Teams Face Crofton

The freshman girls’ and boys’ basketball teams went to Crofton on Monday, January 8. The Lady Jays fell to the Warriors in a close contest, but the Bluejays won in dominant fashion.
The Jays came ready to play as they defeated the Warriors 42-21. The defense was strong the whole game, as they held Crofton to 11 points in three quarters.
“We played extremely well defensively,” said freshman coach Zach Weber. “Even though our offense wasn’t as good as it has been, we were able to maintain control of the game.”
As for the Lady Jays, they lost a tight game by a score of 26-32.
Both freshman teams will play again on Monday, January 22, against Norfolk Catholic on the road.
JH Girls Put Down Creighton Bulldogs

The junior high Lady Jays traveled to Creighton and came home with wins from both the 7th and 8th grade teams. The 8th grade girls came away with a 15-10 win, and the 7th grade team managed a 14-6 victory in their game.
In the 8th grade game, the first quarter started out slow with little offense from both teams as the Lady Jays were unable to score and left the first quarter down 0-2. In the second quarter, the Lady Jays managed to stifle the Bulldogs’ offense and go into the half ahead 8-2, with four points coming from Samantha Fischer, two from Kennedy Warneke, and two from Morgan Moeller. After the half, the Lady Jays came back out with another scoreless quarter, as the Bulldogs closed the Lady Jays’ lead to a point. In the fourth quarter, coming in up 8-7, the Lady Jays finished the game strong with a seven-point quarter behind scoring from Payten Simmons, who racked up all seven points on three two-point buckets and a free throw. The Lady Jays left Creighton with a 15-10 win.
In the 7th grade game, the Lady Jays started off the game with a quick 4-2 lead in the first quarter behind scoring from Addison Sporleder and Makinzie Parsons, who each put in a two-point bucket. In the second quarter, the Jays’ lead increased as Kallie Edins put in two buckets and Alyssa Cederburg added two more points to the board. The Lady Jays defense shutdown the Bulldogs to take a 6-0 quarter and have an eight-point lead going into the half. After the half, the Lady Jays’ offense slowed down, and the Bulldogs shrunk the lead down to four as the Jays went scoreless to the Bulldogs’ four points. In the final quarter, though, the Lady Jays went out strong, once again shutting out the Bulldogs, and behind Ciara Garcia’s four points, ending the game with an easy 14-6 win over the Bulldogs.
The junior high Lady Jays have their next game on Tuesday, January 23, in Norfolk.
