PHS Holds Annual Band and Choir Christmas Concert

by Angelica Volquardsen

The PHS junior and senior high bands and choirs performed their Christmas concert on Thursday, December 14, at the Pierce High Gymnasium. The groups that performed were jazz band, concert band, swing choir, and choir.

First up was the junior high band performing three selected pieces called “The Adventure Begins!” by Matt Conaway, “Deck the Halls With Chips and Salsa” by Ed Huckeby, and “Eclipse” by Jonathan P. Jaworski.

Next was the high school swing choir performing two songs which were “Spinning Wheel” by Kirby Shaw and “Drive My Car” by Roger Emerson.

Following them was the junior high choir singing three songs titled “Can You Hear the Angels” by Greg Gilpin, “The Angel Carol” by Mac Huff, and “The Three-Minute Nutcracker” by Mac Huff.

Along with the junior high choir was the show choir performing their ballad called “Count On Me” by Janet Day.

Continuing the concert was the jazz band, who performed two songs which were “Here Comes Santa Claus” by John Higgens and “Brass Machine” by Mark Taylor.

The high school choir sang next. The four selected pieces for their performance were “Dashing Through the Snow” by John Leavitt, “Breath Of Heaven” by Roger Emerson, “Come to Bethlehem” by Andy Beck, and “He Never Failed Me Yet” by Robert Ray featuring soloists Koby Kuper and Sydney Erickson.

Last but not least was the senior high band performing their three selected pieces, which were “Fable” by Erik Morales, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” arranged by Larry Clark, and “Jingle Bells in Dixie” arranged by James D. Ployhar.

Band director Michael Sindt said, “I think the jazz band had a spirit and energy that they haven’t had so far this year. We also had some top-notch musical moments. I think the band overall  performed at a very high level, and I’m proud of their attention to detail. I had a lot of fun conducting all of them.” Choir director Terri Haselhorst was equally proud, saying, “With swing choir still being new to us, they performed well, but there's some details we need to work on. Each performance is going to be better and easier for them. They also added their third song for competition. The choirs overall did everything I asked, so I feel they met my expectations and performed very well.”
