“In the Zone” is the name of the VEX Robotics competition for 2017-18. Robots are built using VEX materials, and the beginning size requirement of the bots is 18 x 18 x 18 inches, which can be expanded once the competition actually begins. Competition plays out on a 12 foot x 12 foot mat that contains 80 cones scattered throughout. The competitors’ robots must stack on low and high goals and move goals to scored zones.
When the competition first began, there were two practice rounds in which every team got ahold of their bots and made sure they worked the way they wanted them to work. After the practice rounds, they had qualifying matches where they competed against other teams’ bots. The bots’ tasks included From there, the top four teams’ bots advanced to the finals round. With neither Pierce team qualifying for finals, they finished in 5th (Better Vexpectations) and 6th (Me Me Strong Bot).
Senior robotics team member Trevor Zellmer said, “I think overall it was a very fun last meet for our team.”
