Mrs. Birch Attends Nebraska School Counselors Academy

by Montana Ruppert

PHS counselor Mary Birch attended the Nebraska School Counselors Academy Thursday, November 9, and Friday, November 10, in Lincoln.

The theme for the conference was, “Who am I? Identifying Today's School Counselor.” The conference allowed Nebraska school counselors the opportunity to connect with colleagues and attend sessions that provided them with innovative and applicable knowledge which they could take back to their schools. The NSCA is a time when counselors from many different schools gather to get updated information and to learn the latest practices for managing a school counseling program. It is a time where counselors can meet and share what they do and ideas they have for school counseling.

On Thursday, the day started with keynote speaker, Dr. Norm Gysbers, a nationally known expert who writes textbooks for masters degrees in school counseling. He talked about how to implement school counseling programs and how to become an efficient, excellent school counselor. He also talked about ways to prioritize school counseling work.

Mrs. Birch attended many breakout sessions, including a session on college readiness called “Ways to Measure When Kids are Ready for College.” She also attended a session on respect called “Respect; Conversations on Bully, Abuse, and Mental Health,” a session on how to prevent suicide, a session called “Helping Students Navigate on their Digital Lives,” one called “The Sandy Hook Promise,” and another session about how to help parents engage with their children when bullying happens, and a session on how to help a student who might a possible threat.

Counselor, Mary Birch, said, “I feel extremely fortunate that I get to go, because every year I learn so many things about improving our program and getting new ideas. So, I feel that it’s a way that I can come back and build the best counselors program for a school of our size.”
