Lady Jays End Season at Districts
After two days of rain postponing tournament play, the Pierce High softball girls took the field for districts on Saturday, October 7, and faced Highway 91 at West Point-Beemer. The Lady Jays ended their game and season with a loss of 11-15.
The Lady Jays ended up going into two extra innings with Highway 91 after a neck-and-neck battle. In the first inning, Highway 91 took the field first and put away three runs to take an early lead. In the bottom of the inning, Kaylee Dvorak was walked, and a single from Kiley Bierman brought her home for the Lady Jays’ first run of the game. The second inning saw Highway 91 score three more runs, and with the Lady Jays unable to respond on offense, Highway 91 had a lead of 1-6. The top of the third, the Lady Jays held Highway 91 off, and with hits in the bottom of the inning from Bierman and Courtney Yawn, the Lady Jays were able to bring in two runners and bring the score to 3-6. The fourth inning saw no runs from either team, despite hits from Dvorak and Brianna Aguilera. The Lady Jays allowed Highway 91 two runs in the fifth but answered by bringing in another runner to make the score 4-8. In the sixth inning, the Lady Jays kept Highway 91 off of home plate yet again and also managed to bring in a run courtesy of Dvorak’s homer to narrow the gap to 5-8. Allowing one run in the top of the seventh, the Lady Jays had to respond on offense, and they did, putting away four runs thanks to hits from Magdalena Dale, Dvorak, and Aguilera to make the score 9-9 to force the game into extra innings. Both teams brought in one run in the eighth to force another inning, but Highway 91 pulled ahead in the ninth, scoring five runs and holding the Lady Jays to just one to take the win and end Pierce’s season.
Coach Cady Reinke said of the girls’ season, “I feel like this season went very well. We started strong and ended strong and didn’t get the result we wanted but ended on a very high game.”
The Lady Jays ended their season with a 12-13 record.
