Seniors Apply2College
by Morgan Crist
The seniors of PIerce High took part in Apply2College Day to get started with college applications on Wednesday, October 4, in the PHS commons.
Apply2College is a statewide program in Nebraska, and its goal is to take down barriers that keep kids from attending college. It is a part of a national campaign to encourage students by offering assistance to them when they apply to college, such as navigating the application process.
For the first time, Pierce High invited parents to participate in the process. Parents took part in creating a federal ID for themselves and their senior. The purpose of the federal ID is to make applying for federal loans and grants possible for both parents and their children. Several community members, including Bruce Brester, Fran Pytleski, Cheryl Higgins, and Mr. Kendall Steffensen also joined in on the fun by taking off work and helping the students with their applications as well as the guidance counselors, Krista Bailey and Mary Birch, of Pierce High.
Every year the guidance counselors hope that they will have 100% of the students complete an application, and this year they almost achieved this goal. Thirty-eight out of 51 of the students applied to one or more colleges on this day. Those who did complete an application received a free sticker and a cupcake decorated in the colors of the college they applied to.
Mrs. Mary Birch said, “Given the number of glitches we ran into, we were very happy that students had this day where they could get immediate assistance and complete their college applications for next year.”
