Jays Fall to Knights on Gridiron

The Bluejay football team took on rivals the Norfolk Catholic Knights on Thursday, September 21, at Memorial Field. The Jays fell to the undefeated Knights 13-28.

The Jays were the first on the scoreboard Thursday night, as Collin Tinker completed a 33-yard touchdown run and Devan Roth hit the point after. The Knights weren’t able to respond until the second quarter, but they put away three unanswered touchdowns before halftime to bring the score to 7-21. In the third quarter, the Jays showed they weren’t ready to accept defeat, as Pierce’s C. Tinker scored on a one-yard run after a Bluejay drive to narrow the Knights’ lead, but Catholic responded with a touchdown run of their own before the end of the quarter. Although the Jays’ defense prevented the Knights from scoring at all in the fourth, they were also unable to score, and the game ended with the Knights on top 13-28.

Coach Mark Brahmer said, “Our young men played very hard and, for the most part, very well against one of the best teams in the state. I believe our guys have improved each and every week, but we've encouraged them not to be satisfied and to continue to work hard to hopefully win our next three games.”

As a team, the Jays had 16 first downs to the Knights’ 13, 263 net rushing yards to the Knights’ 251, and 383 yards of total offense to the Knights’ 381. Individually, sophomore quarterback Dalton Freeman led the Jays in rushing yards with 60 and passing yards with 120, Devan Roth had two catches for 48 yards, and Brett Tinker had two unassisted and 12 assisted tackles.

The Bluejays’ next game will be played at home against Wayne on Friday, September 29, at 5 p.m.
