Bluejays Participate in Wonderful World of Water

by Morgan Crist

A group of Pierce High sophomores went down to Gilman Park to take part in Wonderful World of Water on Wednesday, September 20.

The Pierce High attendees were members of Mrs. Deb Koehlmoos’s biology class. They included Jakob Edins, Weston Nietzke, Dalton Freeman, Alex McKeown, Devon Unseld, Dylan Svoboda, Carson Oestreich, Carter Rorich, Gavin Larson, Klarissa Norris, and Morgan Crist. Team 1--consisting of Freeman, Mckeown, Svoboda, Rorich, and Larson--won the overall competition in points.

Wonderful World of Water is a program consisting of multiple sessions divided into two tracks. The sessions are ended with quizzes, which are graded to receive points for the individual teams. The day ended with each school shooting off two water rockets, and the rocket that flew the highest won.

The first track, which Team 1 took on, contained the programs How Wet is Our Planet, Slow it Down! Soak it in!, Don’t Treat Your Soil Like Dirt, Owls, and Aquatic Insects. In this track, the team placed 1st.

The second track was explored by Team 2--Edins, Nietzke, Unseld, Oestreich, Norris, and Crist--contained programs called Wetlands, Groundwater the Chemistry, Water and the Body, Wildlife CSI, and Trees, Water, and Emerald Ash Borer.

Mrs. Deb Koehlmoos, the biology teacher who attended the day, said of her overall experience “I thought it was a great day. The weather turned out to be nice, and the kids did a great job competing and had fun and learned some things about the planet that they might not have known before.”
