Lady Jays Softball

Pierce Lady Jays Compete in Softball Tournament.

The Lady Jay softball team played at the Central City tournament on Saturday, September 23, and received 2nd with two wins out of three games.

For their first game, the Lady Jays played Schuyler and won 6-3. In the top of the first inning, several walks and pitching errors, as well as one hit from Rose Graham, brought in three Lady Jay runs, while Schuyler went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning. The second inning saw no points for either team, but the Lady Jays managed a run in the third with hits coming from Courtney Yawn, Graham, and Addison Johnson. Schuyler attempted a comeback in the fourth, as they held the Lady Jays to no runs and scored three of their own, but these would be Schuyler’s final points. The Lady Jays put away two more runs before the end of the game with hits from Yawn, Graham, and Kaycie Druyor.

The Lady Jays faced Central City for their second game but fell with a score of 4-14. The Lady Jays took the field first and allowed the Bison two runs, but a walk combined with a double from Brianna Aguilera put the Lady Jays hot on their tails with a run for Pierce. The Bison managed to pull away with four more runs in the second and held the Lady Jays to none. Although the Lady Jays brought in three runs in the third, the Bison didn’t let up and would score eight more runs before the end of the game to take the W.

In their final game, the Jays played O’Neill with a winning score of 7-4. The Lady Jays took the Eagles three up, three down in the top of the inning and then managed to score four runs in the bottom to take an early lead. Aguilera hit a homerun in the first, and Druyor had a double. O’Neill managed two runs in the second and held the Lady Jays to none, but Pierce extended its lead in the third, scoring three more runs and holding the Eagles to one. Addison Johnson and Druyor had a single and a double, respectively. Neither team would score again until the final inning, when the Eagles brought in one run, but it wasn’t enough, and the Lady Jays were victorious.

The Lady Jays’ next game will be Saturday, September 30, for the Mid-State tournament at O’Neill.


Lady Jays SB Falls to Highway 91

 

The Lady Jays softball team hit the road to face Highway 91 in Leigh on Thursday, September 21, but lost by a score of 2-11.

The game started off quietly for both teams, as neither was able to score. Kaylee Dvorak had a single in the top of the inning and a strikeout in the bottom. The second inning saw no runs for the Lady Jays, but Highway 91 began to pull away, hammering away six runs before the Lady Jays could make three outs. Pierce attempted to catch up in the top of the third, as hits from Annie Johnson, Dvorak, and Brianna Aguilera brought two runs around, but with the Lady Jay defense giving up three more runs, the score read 2-9 after three. Despite a hit from Magdalena Dale in the fourth, the Lady Jays did not score in the top of the inning and allowed two more runs from Highway 91 in the bottom, leaving the final score of the game at 2-11 and a Lady Jay loss.

The softball team will take the field again on Saturday, September 30, for the start of the Mid-State Conference tournament in O’Neill.


SB Lady Jays Compete Against Twin River

The Lady Jays played Twin River on Tuesday, September 19, at the Twin River field in Genoa. The Lady Jays fell by a score of 1-4.

In the first inning, Annie Johnson started Pierce off batting with a triple, but the Lady Jays scored no runs. In the bottom of the inning, Twin River scored three runs, ending the inning with a score of 0-3.

The second inning was quiet for both teams, but in the third inning, Magdalena Dale scored the first run for the Lady Jays. Twin River scored one run, as well, ending the third inning with a score of 1-4. With neither team able to score in the next four innings, Twin River took the win.

“I feel like we played really well under pressure,” said coach Cady Reinke. “It was hard to put everything together, but we held them pretty well. Kaylee Dvorak stood out in the game because she had great hits.”

The next softball game will be held on Saturday, September 30, for Mid-States at O’Neill.
