Juniors Attend College Fair

by Rhayna Waldner

The Pierce high juniors attended a college fair held at Northeast Community College on Monday, September 19.

The college fair started at 9 and went until 11. Representatives from over 60 colleges from Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wyoming were present for juniors to see where they might want to further their education after high school. The college fair was sponsored by the EducationQuest foundation, whose job is to help high school students figure out the complex world of selecting a career and choosing a college that will help them be successful.

College fairs are held to give all juniors an opportunity to start thinking about where they might attend college and which colleges might best fit their career plans after high school. While there, the juniors had to gather information about colleges they may be interested in going to. Some things the juniors had to ask the college representatives about were what grades they need to have to be accepted into the college, what their ACT score has to be, how big the college is, and what size most classes are. Other questions that had to be asked were tuition cost, how many and what activities and sports someone can be involved in, and much more.

“I like that there is a wide variety of colleges there and juniors can get a taste of how colleges are alike and how they are different from each other,” guidance counselor Mary Birch said. “They have this college fair because it gives every junior a chance to sample what’s out there for them in terms of colleges.”
