Science Teacher and Students to Attend Eclipse “Watch Party”

by Samantha Hartman

Les Piper, one of the science teachers at Pierce High, will be taking a group of PHS 8th graders to a “Watch Party” on August 21 to see an eclipse in Kearney.

People in fourteen states including Nebraska will be able to see this eclipse, which will be a total solar eclipse. Piper found out about the eclipse three years ago on a flyer that he had received and decided to take a group of 8th graders because he teaches earth science to them during their 8th grade year. Something Mr. Piper hopes the students will take from this experience is that nature can do amazing things and maybe even some inspiration to become astronomers one day.

The “Watch Party” will start at 11 a.m. and go until 2 p.m. The eclipse should take place around 12:57 p.m and last 1 minute and 54 seconds. While the students are at the “Watch Party,” they will also be able to play interactive games and trivia.

Piper said, “I am looking forward to getting to see the eclipse; it’s something that will be cool to see, and it’s basically a once in a lifetime experience.”
