Lady Jays Beat Norfolk Catholic in Subdistricts

In the Lady Jays’ first subdistrict game, they beat Norfolk Catholic 44-31 on Tuesday, February 14.
In the first quarter, the Lady Jays started off trailing the Knights. Hailey Race shot behind the arc for a three-pointer, Sidney Zimmerer shot a three-pointer, and Carly Sutherland made two points for a total of eight. The Norfolk Catholic Knights started their game in the lead with 10 points.
Going into the second quarter, Zimmerer shot a three-pointer and also made a two-pointer and one free throw. Sutherland shot for two points and Maggie Brahmer shot two baskets and made one free throw for a total of 13 more for the Lady Jays. Pierce allowed the Knights 11 points in the second quarter, and going into halftime the score was tied at 21.
Coming out of halftime, the Lady Jays scored eight points with 2 points from Brahmer and two three-pointers from Race. The Knights edged out Pierce and scored 10 points to take the lead 29-31.
During the last quarter, the Lady Jays’ offense worked hard and scored 15 points. Race scored two points and one free throw, Kayla Simmons made four free throws, and Sutherland scored two points and six free throws. The Pierce defense held the Knights scoreless in the fourth quarter to win the game. The Lady Jays ended their game up 44-31 to continue into the next level of subdistricts.
Carly Sutherland said, “After struggling with passing in the first half, when the fourth quarter came, we realized this could be the last eight minutes of our season, and I think that is what flipped the switch for us. We knew we didn’t want to end the season on that note and wanted to finish competing down in Lincoln.”
Sutherland and Brahmer were tied for the most rebounds, each having nine. Sutherland also had the most blocks (2) and the most steals (3). Race helped out her teammates with 5 assists in the game. Race and Sutherland racked up the baskets and were the top scorers for the game with 12 points each.
This game advanced the Lady Jays to their next subdistrict game which was played on Friday, February 16, against Wayne.
