Sports News April 18th - April 23rd

Bluejays Putt in a Victory

Swinging into action on Tuesday, April 19, Pierce’s JV and varsity golf teams both finished with good scores at a triangular against Battle Creek and Cedar Catholic, held at the Pierce Golf Course.

As a team, Pierce’s varsity finished first with a score of 177. Pierce’s JV team finished with a score of 204, putting them in fifth place. A ninth place title was given to Pierce JV 2. This team scored a 265.

Individually, Pierce’s teams did well also. Oscar Backstrom finished first with a score of 40. Matt Bruce got second with a score of 41. Ethan Blecher golfed a 46. Parker Baumann ended with a score of 48. Bryce Biermann scored a 49. Clay Johnson finished with 50. Dysen Roth and Spencer McElhose both scored a 52. A 55 was scored by Trevon Ronspies. Chance White scored a 57. Taylor Oestreich finished with a 59. Kyle West scored a 62. Wyatt Neitzke finished with a score of 63, and Jaden Gleason scored an 81.

Golf coach Rick Adams said, “We were very happy with the results of the triangular.  Defeating both Cedar and Battle Creek was important as they are two of the better teams in our district.  Hopefully, we can use this as momentum moving forward.”

The golf team was at Lutheran High Northeast, O’Neil, and conference at Pierce last week, and Hartington CC this week. The Pierce Invite is this Saturday, April 30. 

 

JH Track Team Competes at Battle Creek

Journeying to Battle Creek, the JH track team showed their skills on Tuesday, April 19. The seventh grade girls finished third with 86 points, the seventh grade boys finished first with 114 points, the eighth grade girls finished fifth with 45 points, and the eighth grade boys finished first with 130 points.

Placing first for the seventh grade girls were Elizabeth Hammer in the 100 and 200 meter dash with a time of 13.88 and 28.59 seconds respectively and the 4x100 meter relay team of Mikala Stone, Mckenna Shonka, Faith Lubischer, and Kenzie Moeller with a time of 59.3 seconds. Placing second was Lubischer in triple jump at 27’1” and Moeller in the 100 and 200 meter dash with a time of :14.11 and :28.93 respectively. Getting a third place medal was Hammer in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.12 seconds, Lubischer in the 195 meter hurdles with a time of 33.25 seconds, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Alexis Schnoor, Katelynn Anderson, Stone, and Bridget Raff with a time of 5:23.03 minutes. Placing 4th for the seventh grade girls was Sarah Miller in the shot put with a throw of 23’9.5”. Earning a 5th place medal was Moeller in the long jump with a jump of 13’3”, Rhylie Roth in the discus throw with 53’10”, Mckenna Shonka in the triple jump with 27’3”, and Lubischer in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.69 seconds. Placing 6th was Abygail Streff in high jump with a jump of 3’8”, Stone in the shot put with a throw of 23’3”, and Bridget Raff in the 1600 meter run with a time of 7:00.78 minutes.

Getting a first place medal for the 8th grade girls was Destini Beckner in the discus throw with 79’6”. Getting second were Morgan Crist in the pole vault with a vault of 6’ and the 4x400 meter relay team of Zoe Brenden, Crist, Jade Dickey, and Maiya Baumann with a time of 4:50.92 minutes. Placing third  was Baumann in the 200 meter dash with a time of 30.67 seconds. Earning a fourth place medal were Crist in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:10.28 minutes, Brenden in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.85 seconds, and the 4x100 team of Dickey, Crist, Baumann, and Montana Ruppert with a time of 57.81 seconds. Getting 6th was Brenden in the 195 meter hurdles with a time of 34.32 seconds.

Leading his team to their first place finish was seventh grader Cruz Gleason, who won both the discus and the shotput with throws of 108’8.5” and 34’4” respectively. Getting a second place medal were Mason Sindelar in the triple jump with 30’10”, Shawn Rinkel in the shot put with a throw of 30’6”, Dawson Watts in the long jump with 15’9.5”, the 4x100 team of Colt Arnold, Gleason, Tyler Race, and Logan Moeller with a time of 55.57 seconds, and Myles Garcia in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.98 minutes. Placing third were the 4x400 meter relay team of Arnold, Moeller, Race, and Garcia with a time of 4:38.56 minutes, Arnold in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.00 seconds, Sindelar in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:40.78 minutes, and Watts in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19.34 seconds. Getting fourth place was Rinkel in the discus with a throw of 76’5.5”.Earning a 5th place medal was Race in the triple jump with 28’9.5” and Arnold in the long jump at 14’5.5”. Placing 6th was Garcia in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.8 seconds and Watts in the 195 meter hurdles with a time of 34.19 seconds.

For the winning 8th grade boys, getting first was Cole Vogt in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.56 minutes, the 4x100 meter relay team of Brett Tinker,  Kage Heisinger, Cole Vogt, and Dalton Freeman with a time of 50.75 seconds, Carson Oestrich in the 195 meter hurdles, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and the 100 meter hurdles with times of 26.82, 12.01, 24.75, and 15.57 seconds respectively, and the 4x400 meter relay team of Heisinger, Vogt, Zane Gleason, and Freeman with a time of 4:05.57 minutes. Earning a second place medal was Freeman in the 100 meter dash and the 400 meter dash with times of 12.16 and 57.32 seconds, Gavin Larson in the triple jump with a jump of 34’2.5”, and Colby Richart in the discus throw and the shot put with throws of 113’9” and 37’5” respectively. Getting third place was Heisinger in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.65 minutes. Placing fourth was Jeremiah Kruntorad in the 195 hurdles in :33.63 and Tinker in the 100 meter dash in :12.84. Getting fifth place was Gleason in the high jump at 4’8” and Kruntorad in the pole vault at 6’6”. Placing sixth was Reid West in the pole vault at 5’6”, Tinker in the long jump at 15’3”, and Cayden Retzlaff in the 300 meter hurdles in 37.52 seconds.

Junior high coach Brenda Fleecs said, “A lot of the girls worked very hard, and we had 24 personal records that day.”

The next junior high track meet will be Tuesday, May 3, at Wayne starting at 1:00 p.m. 

 

Pierce Golfers Travel to Lutheran High and O’Neill

For the Lutheran High golf meet on Thursday, April 21, out of 71 golfers, Pierce varsity golfer Oscar Backstrom was fifth, scoring an 86, with the highest score of the team. Matt Bruce was 14th, scoring a 92. At nineteenth was Dysen Roth, scoring a 94. Clay Johnson finished number 23 with 95 strokes, and 27th was Ethan Blecher, scoring a 97. Pierce finished in third place with 367, ten strokes behind winner Battle Creek and two strokes behind second place Creighton.


Pierce sent its JV team to a varsity and JV meet at O’Neill on the April 21. Out of 62 golfers at the O’Neill invite, Bryce Bierman was number 31, scoring a 98. Parker Baumann was 33rd, scoring a 99. Shooting a 103 was Trevon Ronspies, who was 42nd. Spencer McElhose scored a 104, and was 44th. Chance White was 50th and scored a 114. The Pierce JV team’s score of 404 placed eighth. Ahead of the Bluejays were six varsity teams and the O’Neill JV team.

 

Boys Golf Second at Conference

Placing four golfers in the top 25 at the Mid-State Conference golf meet earned the Pierce varsity boys second place on Saturday, April 23. The Conference meet was held at the Pierce Golf Course with about 80 degree weather and very strong wind.

Pierce had five golfers compete at the conference meet; only the top four scores of each team count for the team score. Dysen Roth turned in the Bluejays’ best performance. He was fourth with a score of 86. Oscar Backstrom placed fifth, also scoring an 86. Matt Bruce placed eighth, shooting an 89, and Clay Johnson was twenty-second with a score of 97. Ethan Blecher placed twenty-third, also at 97. The top four scores gave Pierce 358 for second place. Battle Creek placed first with a score of 353, and Cedar Catholic placed third with a score of 362.

Head Coach Rick Adams said, “It was a tough day to score, and our guys responded well.  I am very pleased with the team because they continue to look forward and see how they can do better. They are very open about the goal of qualifying for state this season. When we get all five guys to play up to their potential we will shoot some impressive scores.”

The next golf meet for the boys will be their home invite on Saturday, April 30, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

 

JV Golf Swings at Wausa

The JV golf team competed in the Osmond Invite held in Wausa on Saturday, April 23. They placed seventh out of 13 teams.

Individually, Parker Baumann got 22nd with a score of 98. Bryce Bierman placed 27th with a score of 100. Earning 33rd, Spencer McElhose scored a 105. Chance White scored a 113 for 46th place, and Trevon Ronspies got 52nd with a score of 124.

JV golf coach Zach Weber said, ““Some of the guys played well considering the windy conditions. They all know which aspects of their game they need to improve, and they will have two more opportunities to demonstrate the progress that they have made this year.”

The JV golf team was at Hartington CC on Tuesday, April 26. Their next meet is the Pierce Invitational on Saturday, April 30.

 

Track Members Compete in Wausa Invite

Competing in their home stadium, members of the Pierce track team participated in the Wausa Invite held at Pierce on Saturday, April 23.

In the boys’ division, Collin Tinker took home second place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.2. Isaac Lambrecht placed sixth in the 800m run with a time of 2:24.2. In the 1600m run, Ian Fisher placed fifth in 5:21.6. In the 110m hurdles, Devan Roth placed fourth with a time of :16.3. The 4x100 team brought home a fourth place finish with a time of :49.0. The 4x400 relay team placed fifth in 4:06.3. Cody Yawn placed second in pole vault with a height of 12’. In long jump, Roth placed fifth, jumping 18’8”.

On the girls’ side, the 4x100 team placed sixth with a time of 59.0. Sidney Zimmerer, Kiley Bierman, Ashlin Warneke, and Katrina Meier placed fourth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:38.3. Zimmerer also took home first place in high jump with a jump of 5’1”, and Meier placed fourth jumping 4’8”. In pole vault, Casey Sutherland placed second with a height of 8’. Kaylee Dvorak brought home third place in shotput, throwing 34’9”, and Brianna Aguilera placed sixth with a throw of 31’8.5”. In the discus throw, Rhayna Waldner placed sixth with a throw of 93’.

Head coach Tim Waldner said,  “The ones that were there competed hard and handled the weather pretty well.”

 

Junior High Girls in Mid-State Track

The Pierce junior high girls participated in the Mid-State conference track meet at Boone Central on Saturday, April 23. Paced by Elizabeth Hammer and Kenzie Moeller, the seventh grade girls placed fifth with 47 points, and the eighth grade girls placed sixth with 40 points.

Hammer took third in the 100m dash in :13.82. Moeller was 6th; Katelynn Anderson, 19th. Hammer was second in the 200m dash in :28.59, followed by Moeller, third, in :28.75. McKenna Shonka placed 13th. Hammer took 5th in the 400m run in 1:11.58. Alexis Schnoor was 13th. Faith Lubischer placed 9th in the 100m hurdles, followed by Mikala Stone in 15th. Bridget Raff took 12th in the 1600m run. Abygail Streff was 13th. In the 800m run, Streff placed 17th. Taking second in the 4x100m relay were Stone, Shonka, Lubischer, and Moeller in :59.78. In the 4x400m relay, Schnoor, Stone, Anderson, and Raff took 7th with 5:27.75. Streff took 15th in high jump. Moeller was 4th in the long jump with 13’ 8”, followed by Shonka, who placed 16th. Lubischer took third in the triple jump with 27’ 11.5”. Shonka placed 12th and Destiny Ronnfeldt took 16th. Stone took 6th in the shot put with 22’ 8.5”, followed by Sarah Miller in 10th.. Rhylie Roth took 19th. Roth took 5th in the discus throw with 61’ 6”, followed by Ashton Oestreich and Miller.

For the eighth grade girls, Maiya Baumann took fifth in the 100m dash with :14.37, followed by Montana Ruppert in 7th and Madison Huber in 16th. Baumann placed fifth in the 200m dash with :29.57, followed by Ruppert in 12th and Huber in 14th. Morgan Crist took fourth in the 400m run with 1:10.72, followed by Hailey Abler in 19th. Cayce Carlson took 19th in the 800m run. In the 1600m run, Tazlynn Sporleder took 10th. Zoe Brenden placed 8th in the 100m hurdles followed by Angelica Volquardsen in 17th. Brenden took 8th again in the 195m hurdles. Jade Dickey, Baumann, Crist, and Ruppert took second in the 4x100m relay. In the 4x400m relay, Crist, Dickey, Brenden, and Baumann took second. Huber took 14th in the high jump. Crist took first in the pole vault with 7’, followed by Sporleder in 10th and Dickey in 11th. In the long jump, Huber took 10th, followed by Volquardsen in 22nd. Carlson placed 18th in the triple jump. Destini Beckner took 11th in the shot put, followed by Ruppert in 12th and Jenna Brown in 18th. In the discus throw, Beckner took third with 69’ 1.50”, followed by Hailey Abler and Brown.

 

Boys Junior High Wins Mid-State Track

The Pierce junior high boys competed at Boone Central in the Mid-State conference track meet on Saturday, April 23. The seventh grade boys finished in first with 94 points, and the eighth grade boys finished in first as well with 112 points.

For the seventh grade, Colt Arnold took 5th in the 100m dash with :13.26, followed by Ethan Dohmen in 16th and Travis Jensen in 19th. Miles Garcia placed 4th in the 200m dash with :27.47. Arnold took 11th and Dustin Jensen took 22nd. Garcia took third in the 400m run with 1:04.72, followed by Tyler Race in 17th and Lucas Gnat in 21st. Mason Sindelar took 4th in the 800m run with 2:41.20. Dawson Watts placed second in the 100m hurdles with :19.15, followed by Aiden Gnat in 14th and Tanner Kuper in 15th. In the 195m hurdles, Dalton Delka took 12th, followed by Aiden Gnat in 13th and Kuper in 14th. Arnold, Watts, Cruz Gleason, and Logan Moeller took first in the 4x100m relay with :55.48. Arnold, Moeller, Garcia, and Mason Sindelar took second in the 4x400m relay with 4:40.49. Watts took first in the high jump with 4’ 8”, followed by Chaden Roth. Garcia took first in the pole vault at 8’. Watts placed 4th in the long jump at 16’ 1”, followed by Moeller in 7th and Tyler Race in 15th. Sindelar took third in the triple jump with 31’ 8.50”, followed by Race in 8th. Cruz Gleason placed first in the shot put with 35’ 8.25”, followed by Shawn Rinkel in 5th with 29’ and Hunter Raabe in 13th. Cruz Gleason took first in the discus throw with 101’ 6”, followed by Rinkel in 7th and Tristen Miller in 11th.

In the eighth grade, Carson Oestreich placed first in the 100m dash with :11.83, followed by Dalton Freeman in third at :12.20 and Brett Tinker in 6th at :12.59. Oestreich took first in the 200m dash at :12.20, followed by Dylan Svoboda in 17th and Jacob Kerber in 26th. Freeman took first in the 400m run with :58.14, followed by Kage Heisinger in sixth with 1:01.68 and Tinker in 10th. Cole Vogt placed second in the 800m run with 2:25.63, followed by Jake Edins in 18th and Jayden Sporleder in 22nd. Sporleder took 16th in the 1600m run. Oestreich took first in the 100m hurdles at :16.04, followed by Cayden Retzlaff in 10th and Jermeiah Kruntorad in 11th. Oestreich also placed first in the 195m hurdles with :30.31, followed by Kruntorad in 10th and Retzlaff in 13th. In the 4x100m relay, Tinker, Heisinger, Vogt, and Dalton Freeman took first with :52.43. Heisinger, Vogt, Zane Gleason, and Freeman took first in the 4x400m relay with 4:11.18. Zane Gleason took 7th in the high jump, followed by Gavin Larson in 13th. Tinker took second in the long jump with 17’ 2”, followed by Larson in 16th and Edins in 21st. Larson took 4th in the triple jump with 35’ 1.50”, followed by Edins in 14th and Reid West in 18th. In shot put, Colby Richart took 8th, followed by Svoboda in 12th and Weston Neitzke in 14th. Richart placed first in the discus with 115’ 2.50”, followed by Seth Valverde in 4th with 102’ 7” and Dylan Kuehler in 8th.
