FCCLA Members Attend Peer Retreat

FCCLA Members Attend Peer Retreat
by Krystina Schuett

The Pierce FCCLA chapter took part in the State Peer Education Retreat held in Kearney on Monday, February 29.

The students from Pierce who attended were Kaylee Dankert, Leslie Dohmen, Desirea Druyor, Jasmine Elsberry, Sydney Erickson, Rose Graham, Emilia Goetsch, Paige Herda, Breane Hoffman, Ellie Peters, Mackenzie Richmond, Stephanie Rinkel, Shelby Ronspies, Madison Siedschlag, Sydney Slater, and Maria West.

The theme for this year’s meeting was “To Infinity and Beyond” with FCCLA. The inspiration for this theme came from the movie Toy Story, which ties in with the charity that was benefited, Love Adelyn. Love Adelyn is an organization founded to raise awareness for Congenital Heart Defects and to help children in need. Nebraska FCCLA donated over 700 items to Love Adelyn. Out of those items, the Pierce chapter contributed 230 items.

There were many awards given at the Peer Retreat. Pierce won the FCCLA Survivor Competition. Since they won the competition, Pierce got to choose a charity to donate $600. They chose the Royal Family, a camp for kids with disabilities.

At the event, students listened to several speakers and attended various sessions. One of the speakers was Neil Halford. He is a blind former wrestler and spoke about making it to Nebraska State Wrestling. He shared his inspiring journey to success in his presentation. The Royal Family Kids’ Camp presented a session entitled “Treating Every Child like Royalty.” Another speaker was Sara Giboney, who presented “How to Create and Online Career in Wellness.”

FCCLA sponsor Cheryl Timm said, “Not only did they have a lot of fun competing and collecting items for the Love Adelyn, I think they all took something from it that they could use in their life.”
