FCCLA Competes at STAR
by Krystina Schuett

At Wayne State College, several members of the Pierce FCCLA chapter competed in the district STAR contest by giving speeches on Wednesday, January 20.

STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition. At the event, students go against other FCCLA chapter members to try to go to the state competition. Competitors give their presentations in front of two judges. The judges then judge their displays against a rubric.

Ellie Peters and Rachel Fenton qualified for state in their event, Illustrated Talk, Jr. By receiving top Gold in Career Investigation, Jr., Sydney Erickson will also be going to state. Desirea Druyor received top silver in NE STAR- Family Challenges, Sr. and is going to the state competition. Also qualifying for state was Stephanie Rinkel in Promote and Publicize, Jr.

Sydney Slater and Paige Snodgrass spoke in the Focus on Children, Jr. event. The duo earned Gold. Leslie Dohmen and Madison Siedschlag competed in Illustrated Talk, Sr. and received Silver. Also competing in Illustrated Talk, Sr., Shelby Ronspies and Mariah West received Silver as well.

“I was satisfied with the results of the competition,” said FCCLA advisor Cheryl Timm. “The members spent a lot of time on their projects.”

Those that will be going on to state will continue to work on their events for competition in April. If members receive 1st place at state, they will continue on to competition in San Diego, California in July.
